-What is the Youth Volunteer Corps Summer of Service?
Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) is a program of Volunteer Southern Arizona that engages youth ages 11-18 in meaningful service learning projects in the Greater Tucson area. Projects are led by AmeriCorps members and impact community issues such as education, emergency preparedness, environment, health, and leadership. This summer holds eight weeks of intensely meaningful and fun-packed service projects. These projects generally take place Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

-How do I get involved?

You can start by coming to our summer registration event on May 12, 2012! The event will take place at 3130 N. Dodge Blvd. and will start at 10:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM. Be sure to arrive early for guaranteed registration in the project that interests you most! At the event, you will learn everything you will need to know about our summer service projects. If you miss our registration have no fear! You can visit Volunteer Southern Arizona at 3130 N. Dodge from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, call us at (520) 881-3300, or visit our website at www.volunteersoaz.org (click on Programs and scroll down to YouthNow! YVC summer projects have a registration fee of $100. There are full and partial scholarships available.

Week 1: May 29-31

Habitat for Humanity

Discovering Diversity

Be a caring companion and discover how easy it can be to brighten the day of a senior citizen! We will spend the week at Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging where you will meet the amazing people. Kick off the week by getting to know the residents at a carnival themed party complete with face painting and treats! Each day you will interact with the residents in new and exciting ways- help them make mosaic flower pots, play pool, bingo and more! By the end of the week, you will have the chance to perform a creative piece for residents who are experiencing the early signs of memory loss. If you have a passion for caring, then this project is for you.

Challenge your perceptions and discover the diversity in Tucson by helping at three local organizations that serve minority groups. At Desert Ashram (a universal monestary, meditation, and retreat center) we will be building a garden. We will go from creating a peaceful environment to creating peace for people living with HIV/ AIDS. TIHAN, Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network, will show us how to make HIV/AIDS ribbons, origami cranes, and care packages for those who are living with HIV. Our final day will be spent with YWCA working in their garden.

Garden for Good

Do you love being outdoors and getting your hands dirty? Come join us in the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association Community Garden! Plant some veggies and get active with us as we learn basic gardening techniques. By helping in the garden, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped families in the Sunnyside neighborhood gain access to healthy foods! We will also create artwork for the garden and learn about recycling.

Through the Looking Glass

Would you like to create art using glass? Sonoran Glass Art Academy does exactly that! Join us as we create glass mosaic panels and help with a sculpture garden. Many glass blowing and glass art projects occur at Sonoran Glass Art Academy year round, so come join the fun! Help the community by making art for all to enjoy and doing some gardening work.

Water in Tucson?! We sure do have it! Learn how to harvest it and conserve it. Spend a week with REALM Environments and University of Arizona Cooperative Extension as we learn all different techniques, both indoor and outdoor, then finish the week off by painting and installing cisterns! Learn about healthy food and be a part of a new farm!

Arizona turned 100 this year! Celebrate your state and your community by learning about Arizona's history and working in and around Tucson's great museums. We will visit the Arizona Historical Society Museum at the U of A, viewing the exhibits, learning how history is preserved and taught and take care of some artifacts of our own. We will also spend time at the Fort Lowell Museum, where a park clean up might just lead to a treasure hunt; hint, hint. Make a little of your own history this summer!

Interested in exploring Colossal Cave Mountain Park? Well heres your chance! Come explore the park by helping with trail maintenance, removing buffelgrass, and helping with the gardens. Colossal Cave Mountain Park preserves our natural resources and native plants and animals. Dont miss out on this educational and interesting adventure where we get to tour the cave for free!

Young children crave role models in their life. Step up and be a positive one for the children of Casa de los Ninos! Casa de los Ninos provides a safe environment for children who have been abused, neglected or at-risk. Join us as we lead an animal themed day camp experience for children who deserve it. We will learn about and play with insects, interact with animals from the Desert Museum, take a trip to the zoo, and so much more!

Taking Charge of Tohono Chul

Home sweet home is not something that most people have to worry about, but for some people, they can't go home. Lend a hand to refugees by harvesting and canning fruits or vegetables and celebrating the cultures that have come to the US. With the International Rescue Committee and Iskashitaa, learn about refugees in Tucson and how to harvest wild food in your community. Celebrate with new friends at a Welcome Party at the end of the week!

Take charge of the gardens and trails throughout Tohono Chul Park. Enjoy the outdoors while helping to preserve the parks environment. We will be helping with trail maintenance, doing some gardening, and making sure Tohono Chul Park can continue to be beautiful. We will celebrate our progress at the end of the week with an invitation out to all the parents for a small party.

Give a Horse a Hand

Come out and get hands on helping at Jumpin Jack Ranch with Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary. The horses there have spent most of their lives being mistreated, but now they have a safe place to live. Were going to help this organization by mucking corrals (picking up poop), cleaning water troughs and horse equipment, weeding, working on their garden, and most importantly, providing the horses with positive human interaction so they can learn to trust again. You will receive safety training so that you can be around the horses.

Earthquake! Fire! Tsunami! Oh, my! Curious about how Tucson responds to an emergency? Take a week with the Tucson Police Department, Rural/Metro Fire, and the Red Cross to learn all about Tucsons disaster relief. Youll spend some time touring a fire truck and ambulance, getting a first-hand look at how the Red Cross prepares for an emergency, and youll round out the week teaching the youngsters at House of Neighborly Service what you learned. Safety first!

Week 8: July 23-26

Rebuilding Together

Come help not only transform a home, but a life with Rebuilding Together. Give a homeless veteran a chance to have a home by helping with the renovation of a house. We will be learning basic construction techniques, painting both the interior and exterior, cleaning, and doing yard work throughout the week.

Make Our Neighborhood Shine

Are you in to sports, exercise or eating healthy? Come join us at House of Neighborly Services as we teach young children about active and nutritious lifestyles! Help build an obstacle course for the children, cook a healthy snack with them, and teach them what it really means to be healthy. We will celebrate your service with some water balloon action on the last day!

Ever watch something go from shabby to chic? Well, now you can be involved! Help the Palo Verde Neighborhood clean up, remove buffelgrass, teach residents about safety in their neighborhood by writing an e-newsletter, and lots more!

Greater Tucson Youth Leadership

What is Greater Tucson Youth Leadership?
The nationally recognized Greater Tucson Youth Leadership Program is a dynamic collaboration among Volunteer Southern Arizona, the YouthNow! Collaboration, and influential community leaders. The Youth Leadership Institute is a two-week summer program based upon Greater Tucson Leaderships issue-day model. Each day youth participants will be exposed to important issues facing our community through exploratory trips and discussions with high-level leaders. Youth will leave with a greater interest in civic engagement, confidence in their leadership abilities, knowledge about the issues that are important to them, and a personal leadership plan. Youth must commit to both weeks and attend all sessions. Youth must be nominated for this program. Self-nominations will be accepted. Nomination forms can be found on our website at www.volunteersoaz.org or by contacting a team leader at 881-3300. Nominations will be accepted on a rolling basis, but due to high interest there is a suggested deadline of May 12th.
