With help from dedicated
teachers, involved parents, an
invested administration and a
nurturing community, the
hard-working students of
Medford scored well on the an-
nual report cards recently re-
leased by the state Department
of Education.
The report cards, based
upon the 2010-2011 school year,
show proficiency in student
testing, information concern-
ing classroom environments,
the finances of the district and
details on the staff and stu-
dents.
The graduation rate was
98.10 percent at Shawnee High
School, which was above the
Lenape Regional High School
District average of 96.89 per-
cent the highest rate in
Burlington County according
to assistant superintendent
Carol L. Birnbohm.
Students who took the SAT
performed better than the
state average in all three cate-
gories.
In math, the average score
was 551 compared to the state
score of 517. The verbal sec-
tion had students scoring an
average of 543, while the state
averaged in at 493. The essay

embark in fun exercises with
youngsters atop their saddles and
otherwise enjoy their retire-
ments.
Whether they know it or not,
these three animals and some of
their fellow horse buddies are
part of something much bigger.
They are helping the lives of
special-needs children.
Kelly Adams and Kimberly Po-
hubka founded the Kaleidoscope
Therapeutic Riding Program in
2009 to provide equine therapy to
area children.
The movement of the horse is
physical therapy for the kids,
said Adams, who is the program
director for the farm. We do dif-
ferent things so that its some fine
motor, some gross motor and
some planning ahead. We try to
tie in as many different aspects of
learning and cognition as possi-
ble while making it fun.
The instructors will play
games such as tic-tac-toe or red
light-green light while still work-
ing on the goals for the child.
There is even a basketball net on
site.
We do all different games with
them, she said.
For a student working on
speech goals and learning the

would say a phrase such as walk
on, but emphasize the wa part
of the word.

Residents living in and around
Medford can be screened to re-
duce their risk of having a stroke
or bone fracture. Faith United
Presbyterian Church will host
Life Line Screening on July 25.
The site is located at 318 Stokes
Road.
Four key points every person
needs to know:
-Stroke is the third leading
cause of death and a leading
cause of permanent disability
-80 percent of stroke victims
had no apparent warning signs
prior to their stroke
-Preventive ultrasound screen-
ings can help you avoid a stroke
-Screenings are fast, noninva-
sive, painless, affordable and con-
venient
Screenings identify potential
cardiovascular conditions such
as blocked arteries and irregular
heart rhythm, abdominal aortic
aneurysms and hardening of the
arteries in the legs, which
is a strong predictor of heart dis-
ease.
A bone density screening to as-
sess osteoporosis risk is also of-
fered and is appropriate for both
men and women.
Packages begin at $149. All five
screenings take 60 to 90 minutes
to complete.
For more information regard-
ing the screenings or to schedule
an appointment, call 1 (877) 237-

in our opinion
T
he state Department of Educa-
tion recently released its annu-
al report cards, reviews of
every school in New Jersey. And if
anything, they reveal just how com-
plex a system it is to run public
schools.
From budgeting to cost-per-pupil
numbers to maintaining test scores to
ensuring theres adequate technology
in schools and classrooms, theres no
doubt its hardly an easy task to main-
tain excellence in schools.
Yet what we found is quite promis-
ing, especially in high schools in towns
we cover.
SAT scores in all three categories:
verbal, mathematics and essay are
very strong. In most cases, the average
scores were at or above the states aver-
age. Some were well above average.
The same can be said for HSPA test,
which all high school students must
take and pass before graduating. The
average scores, for the most part in our
readership, are solidly at or above state
averages, especially in the proficient
and advanced proficiency categories
for both mathematics and language
arts.
This is a true representation of the
diligent work of most students, and its
an indication of the hard work of most
teachers and administrators in New
Jersey.
While youll see in our report card
stories this week that most superin-
tendents of schools and other school
officials are happy with results, we
were also pleased to see some of the
same leaders not content with the sta-
tus quo, and making it clear that as
well as districts have performed,
theres still much more room for im-
provement in all areas.
Often, teachers and school adminis-
trators mostly unfairly are knocked
by the public. There are too many in-
stances to list here. Yet one thing is
abundantly clear from the local results
of the 2010-11 report cards: Theres
much more to celebrate than there is to
be concerned about.
Making the grade
State school report cards confirm: local districts getting the job done
How did your school fare?
In todays edition of The Sun, we take
a look at results of the 2010-11 state
schools Report Cards. Be sure to read
the story beginning on page 1, and
check out our information graphics
on the inside pages of the newspaper.
portion garnered an average of 533 with
the state scoring 496.
The average Lenape District total score
was 1566.
Birnbohm emphasized the importance
of completing the PSAT assessment prior
to taking the SAT.
There is a huge correlation between stu-
dent scores and the completion of the
PSAT, she said.
The HSPA scores also show improve-
ment at the district level.
Students did very well on the HSPA,
said Birnbohm. Weve improved in both
the math and the language arts literacy as-
sessment.
Some 96.9 percent of the total district
population was either proficient or ad-
vanced in the field of language arts while
88.3 percent scored similarly in math.
At Shawnee High School, 97.7 percent
were either proficient or advanced in lan-
guage arts and 90.9 percent in math.
Average class sizes were 24.7 students
per class, which was higher than the state
average of 19.
There were 12 students per faculty mem-
ber, a number slightly higher than the state
average of 11.2.
Shawnee administrative personnel had
a median salary of $125,274, down from the
2009-2010 school years $129,812, but higher
than the state median of $121,597.
Teachers salaries median rate was
$64,295 while the state median was $68,435.
It cost $19,265 to educate each student in
the district.
We have very involved parents. We have
great sending districts that feed to us,
Birnbohm said. We have students and
teachers that come prepared and willing to
work.
That sentiment begins at the secondary
level in Medford.
According to Thomas Olson, Medford
Township School Districts administrative
director of programming and planning,
staff and parents working together keep
the education train moving.
Its a community effort, he said. We
have really great learners.
There are seven school buildings within
the K-8 district.
Class sizes at Chairville Elementary
School, with an average of 18.7 students in
a classroom, came in slightly lower than
the state average of 19. Other district
schools were marginally higher than the
state average.
While the NJASK tests come each year,
they do not have a strong impact on the
methods of teaching, said Olson.
We dont spend a lot of time stopping
what were doing, he said. For the most
part, we try not to deviate from our stan-
dard program.
The K-8 district trusts the curriculum in
line with Common Core Standards and in-
struction to prepare students for the test.
Particularly in reading and writing, we
do have some test-like content that weve
embedded in some of our units of study,
he said. We do a little bit of work in which
we do have the kids practice the test for-
mat.
This especially rings true in the lower
grades, where students have taken multi-
ple choice and open-ended question prac-
tice tests.
Only 3.9 percent of students at Cranber-
ry Pines School were partially proficient in
the fifth-grade NJASK test math section.
The rest were either proficient or advanced
in their scores.
At the eighth-grade level, students who
took the NJASK test were nearly all either

The advent of the Food Net-
work and such shows as TLCs
Cake Boss and Fabulous
Cakes has revolutionized
desserts. Words like fondant and
pulled sugar have become a part
of ones everyday vocabulary and
cakes have become works of art
especially when it comes to spe-
cial occasions.
According to Classic Cake ex-
ecutive pastry chef Robert Ben-
nett, This is a really exciting
time for pastries and desserts.
Clients are looking to experiment
with new flavors, compositions
and accents. They are ready to let
their imagination and taste buds
stretch beyond the traditional.
Chef Bennetts Top Five
When asked the top five ingre-
dients for the ideal wedding cake,
Bennett is quick to reply. After 30
years of creating extraordinary
desserts for special occasions, he
is well prepared to answer.
Start planning early To pro-
vide time for the creative process
and avoid any conflicts, couples
should begin as soon as the wed-
ding date is set.
Request a tasting Pastry chefs
are proud of their creations and
will prepare tempting tastings,
which can include gluten, dairy
and sugar free options upon re-
quest.
Consider the time of year
Wedding cake consultants will
help select flavors for any season
like peaches in the summer or a
pumpkin sponge with chestnut
cream for fall.
Discuss the cake size It is im-
portant to consider if the cake
will be served as the actual
dessert or is a symbolic supple-
ment that guests may taste or
take home.
Have a budget in mind When
choosing your cake design, a bak-
ery should be able to provide a
minimum cost. Often edible
pieces of art, intricacies and de-
tails impact time and expense.
Yet, it comes down to being
true to ones self. Says Bennett,
The most important point I tell
any couple is this is their day and
the cake should please them not
the guests nor the in-laws.

proficient or advanced in lan-
guage arts. Only 2.7 percent
showed a need for improvement.
The median salary of adminis-
trators in the district was
$109,744, while the state median
was $111,133.
Teachers were paid more than
the state at $67,286. The state me-
dian was $59,575.
And the total cost to educate
each student? $15,615.
Next school year, the Depart-
ment of Education will begin to
develop and publish school per-
formance reports to replace the
report card, according to a re-
lease by the state.
Through these reports, the
Department will set specific
school and subgroup perform-
ance targets for both language
arts and math, and will report an-
nual progress towards meeting
those goals, reads the release.
In addition, the reports will in-
clude a number of new data
points including progress to-
wards closing achievement gaps,
comparison to peer schools with
similar demographics, growth as
measured through Student
Growth Percentiles on state tests
over time, and additional college
and career readiness data
points.
The hope is for the state to pro-
vide better information through
the new reports.
While these Report Cards pro-
vide some helpful information to
parents, the general public, and
school administrators about
school performance, the Depart-
ment has long acknowledged that
we can do a much better job of
providing actionable information
for the purposes of school im-
provement. We are moving to a
new School Performance Report
next year that will provide un-
precedented data on how our
schools are doing, said acting
commissioner Chris Cerf.
While Olson said the current
report card gives a fairly accurate
picture, it doesnt fully depict the
true essence of the district.
It doesnt capture all the dif-
ferent content areas, he said.
Its a useful tool for some parents
to get a sense of what some of the
school is like.
According to Joseph J. Del
Rossi, superintendent of schools,
in the district narrative released
in Jan., Collaboration, partner-
ship, and cooperation by stu-
dents, parents, faculty, and com-
munity members are vital to our
districts' success. Together, we
share in educating students to ap-
preciate and respect the contribu-
tion of individual talents, cul-
tures, and backgrounds that re-
flect our society.

Liza Barr, daughter of Brian
and Jennifer Barr, a current
eighth-grader at Memorial Mid-
dle School, has been named as a
Brine National All-Star.
She has been selected to repre-
sent the Northeast Region in the
2012 Brine National All-Star
Lacrosse Academy and National
Lacrosse Classic to be held
in Boyds, Md. from June 30 to
July 3.
The Brine National All-Star
Lacrosse
Academy
brings the top
160 middle
school lacrosse
players in the
country to one
venue, where
eight regional
teams will
compete to be-
come this
years national champion.
BARR
Liza Barr named a
Brine National All-Star
throughout the day, but different
parts are stressed for each stu-
dent a little bit more, depending
on whatever their goals are, she
explained.
Many of her therapy students
are in other programs as well,
whether for speech or vision or
other disabilities, and she wants
the horse program to be fun while
rewarding for them.
When parents come in with the
children to register for the class-
es, Adams asks of their needs.
What are your huge goals, and
then well figure out how we can
make it really fun, she said. Its
a good time.
The way the barn is set up, par-
ents are able to sit and watch the
lessons from another room.
The therapy program moved to
the Medford location in April.
They used to be in Mt. Laurel.
I am so proud of Kelly and her
accomplishment. Kelly is so de-
serving of such a great award.
Her dedication and hard work in
everything she does and in the
program really shows, said Po-
hubka. Through the lessons and
the support she gives to our hors-
es, students, parents and volun-
teers is part of what makes our
program special.
Karen Byrne, a Medford resi-
dent and parent of avid sixth-
grade volunteer Malaree, is at the
farm on a weekly basis.
Its amazing what they do
with the children, she said. I
cant say enough about the pro-
gram.
After she sat through a class
and saw the activities and the
benefits, Byrne said she was
blown away.
Adams is also Malarees
teacher at the Haines Sixth Grade
Center in Medford.
Recently, Adams was recog-
nized for her efforts inside and
outside of the classroom with the
Sy Kantrowitz Humanitarian
Award.
According to an email sent by
Medford Education Associations
president Gail Weisberg, Adams
is a foster parent for dogs through
Recycled Love, and facilitator for
AIT for You, which is a nation-
wide auditory integration-train-
ing program that uses music ther-
apy to help special-education stu-
dents.
She has also volunteered on
Jennings Farm, a farm that
boards horses while also being a
cattle and chicken farm.
I grew up across the street
from the farm. My grandmother
lives in the house right here, my
parents live down the street, she
said. On the weekends, (I was) al-
ways with the horses. Both of my
parents grew up on horse farms
so as far as Im concerned, I never
had a choice.
She currently teaches lessons
two days a week after school.
Its really fun for me to come
here after school, she said. My
role here is more significantly
with the therapy, but I do teach
typical lessons also.
Everyone at her day job knows
her for her love of the horses and
children, she said.
This year, she teaches students
with multiple disabilities in a
small class setting. She teaches
them life skills rather than cur-
riculum.
In the past, shes taught inclu-
sion and a small group class.
This will be my year to get
tenure, she said.
She wasnt always aware of her
love for special needs children.
It wasnt until she took a class
her junior year of college that her
eyes were opened, she said.
This is interesting. This is
fun. You can be really creative,
she said.
Adams is grateful and honored
to have received the humanitari-
an award this year.
I didnt see it coming, she
said. This is just what I do. I
enjoy it.

The Medford Black Diamonds
Girls fast-pitch softball team
dominated their first UGSA play-
off game on Saturday, June 9
played in Moorestown. Defeating
the Pemberton Blitz 13-3, the Dia-
monds advance to the UGSA
Semi-final round against a tough
Cinnaminson Red Team to be
played early this week.
Your hometown Diamonds
jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in
the first inning with solid hitting
by the top of the order. Pember-
ton battled back to score three
runs in the third until the Dia-
mond girls put the game out of
reach scoring 8 more unanswered
runs through the fifth inning.
Stand out playing by Paula Est-
low and Taylor Maroon kept the
8-2-1 Blitz in check. One of the Di-
amonds pitching aces Deanna De-
marco pitched the entire game
and was awarded the game ball.
The Medford Black Diamonds
Girl's softball team plays their
home games at the Medford Soft-
ball Complex at 201 Hartford
Road in Medford. Tryouts for the
team will be conducted in July for
girls ages 9-19. For more informa-
tion, please email
