I have been to New York many times, initially for business trips and
to give speeches, later to see my son, who is studying in the US. This
time, at the hotel I often stay at, I found YUE and looked at the in-
teresting content and information insideit planned out several pro-
grams by itself. The result was idealwith the maps and shopping
guides, I can give my friends and family all the presents and watches
I buy. Every package is taken care of! I look forward to YUE plan-
ning my next travel itinerary for me!

Ligne Roset
The elegant atmosphere in the chic lounge area showcased Ligne Rosets uniquely designed
and stunning furniture and mesmerized the over 375 fashionably clad guests. The arrival of
Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner drew everyones attention and caused much
excitement. The trio posed for the enthusiastic guests pictures with genuine smiles.
The guests excitement further increased when concert pianist Lang Lang descended down
the escalator to join the launch party. Guests instantly became starry-eyed fans, shyly asking for
their photos to be taken with the famed pianist.
Treated to live music performed by musicians from the Julliard School, guests mixed and
mingled with friends such as Lu Hailin (spouse of the Chinese Ambassador to the United
Nations), Xia Zhishun (spouse of the Deputy Chinese Consul General in New York), Liz
Peek, Yaz Hernandez and Eleanora Kennedy (Trustees of Directors of Couture Council),
Lady Liliana Cavendish, Dame Jillian Sackler, Ren Balcer (Emmy-winning director and
philanthropist),and Geoffrey Bradeld, one of Architecture Digests top 100 interior designers.
YUE Magazine also welcomed delegations of business executives and groups of leisure travel-
ers from Mainland China.

Jiang Tian has reached an incred-
ible milestone on his exceptional
journey from factory worker to
internationally-renowned per-
former. In the summer of 2011,
the Beijing-born opera singer
returned to his home city with
twenty young Western-trained
opera singers from eight different
countries. In a symbolic gesture,
the Westerners sang modern Chi-
nese opera at Beijings National
Centre for the Performing Arts
in the inaugural season of I SING
BEIJING, a Mandarin-language
opera workshop and performance
project that made history and
garnered worldwide media atten-
tion. A second season of I SING
BEIJING will begin in July 2012.
For Tian, who once had to
sneak away from his factory job to
practice his vocal skills, I SING BEIJING is an emotional opportu-
nity to join together his beloved native culture and the Western art
form he has come to master and enjoy.
Tians career took off after he landed a contract with the New
York Metropolitan Opera in 1991; he has been performing there
for each consecutive season ever since. He has achieved critical ac-
claim throughout his career, which spans over 1,300 performances
in 40 operatic roles. The most notable aspect of his career has been
his tenure at the Met, where he has sung in 26 operas over a span
of nearly twenty years. There, he has played General Wang in Tan
Duns The First Emperor opposite Plcido Domingo and is the go-to
opera singer to play Timur in Turandot. He is recognized as one of
the rst Chinese opera singers to play major roles in Western operas,
including Oroveso in Norma, Count Walter in Luisa Miller, Philip
II in Don Carlos, Le Comte in Manon, Raimondo in Lucia di Lam-
mermoor, Ramphis in Aida, Procida in I Vespri Siciliani and Me-
phistopheles in Faust. Additionally, he has played prominent roles in
many Chinese operatic performances, including the title roles in The
Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci in Hong Kong and Poet Li Bai at
the Central City Opera in Colorado. He has also starred in produc-
tions at major opera houses, including Berlin State Opera, Teatro
Colon, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Arena di Verona, and Chicago
Lyric Opera.

COVER STORY
1964
That night was the rst [time] I started to pay attention to West-
ern music, he says. That night, he fell in love with the movement.
He was moved by the sparkle the music brought to his fathers eyes
and the way it changed his voice. His father was usually a very serious
man, but that glumness disappeared when the music came on. This
must be a powerful thing, he thought.
Beethovens Symphony No. 6 was the last piece that Tians father
conducted before the ban on all things Western would keep the mu-
sic of Beethoven and his contemporaries underground in China for
decades.
Tian spent the next six and a half years of his life working in an
electrical boiler factory outside of Beijing. He says that he became a
bit wild, returning to the piano and creating experimental composi-
tionstapping the keys with his forehead, chopsticks, anythingat
all hours of the day and night. [I was] the rst avant-garde com-
poser, he chuckles. One day, he returned to nd his piano without
a voice. A neighbor had come by in his absence and removed all the
hammers. My music could be very loud, he says.
The muted piano incident was only a temporary interruption.
Soon afterward, he was banging away on another set of keys, this
time on an accordion. He thought he would become a professional
accordion player, but a coincidental run-in with a friends neighbor
planted the seed of his future career as a powerful operatic bass. The
stranger told him that he had a natural gift and encouraged him to
take voice lessons. I dont remember his name or face, [but] he was
a sign! he says.

SUMMER 2012 | 35
1977
1987
1990
He nally came to the U.S. in 1983 with only $35 in his pocket.
That didnt stop him from buying a standing pass at the Metro-
politan Opera to see his very rst opera, Ernani, starring Luciano
Pavarottiwith whom Tian would perform exactly 10 years later on
the same stage.
From New York, Tian headed to Denver, Colorado to pursue
his Masters Degree in Voice at the University of Denvers Lamont
School of Music. His scholarship did not cover living expenses, so he
found work as a dishwasher in a student union . He also worked as a
bus boy in a Chinese restaurant, but was red shortly after because
he was too slow and stood around like a manager, not a bus boy. He
completed his Masters program in 1987.
By 1990, Tian had returned to New York and realized his goal: he
was a professional musician. Soon came the biggest week of his life
thus far, with two big auditions on his plateone at City Opera on a
Wednesday and another at the Met on a Friday. City Opera passed
on him, and when he showed up at the Met, his accompaniment was
late. In desperation, he grabbed the collar of the rst available pianist
and pleaded with him to play for his audition. The pianist, although
alarmed, agreed, and together they went on the stage.
Now, Tian is helping young Chinese vocal artists hone their talent
by providing them with an opportunity he never had. In addition to
the performance series, the visiting artists of I SING BEIJING are
studying Mandarin as a lyric language through coaching sessions in
both Western and modern Chinese operatic repertoire, performance
classes that emphasis character building and vocal and dramatic
delivery. The initiative, launched jointly by the Chinese Language
Council International and the Asian Performing Arts Council, fol-
lows the tradition of strengthening diplomacy and mutual under-
standing between China and the West through the performing arts.
I SING BEIJING is the rst performing arts program embraced by
the U.S. State Departments 100K Strong Initiative, an effort aimed
at dramatically increasing and diversifying the number of Americans
studying in China.

Since Sex and the City made the Cosmopolitan the must-have cocktail,
every city boy remembers how Samantha sported a massive cocktail
ring while sipping a Cosmo.
Some sources trace the origin of cocktail rings back to the days of
Prohibition, when alcohol was illegal and speakeasys were the places
for secret parties. The elite and wealthy would display their nest
fashions in underground rooms and indulge themselves in free-ow-
ing alcohol. Status-conscious women would parade around, showing
off gigantic rings while holding up an illegal and innitely desirable
cocktail!
Regardless of their origin, cocktail rings are now a symbol of free-
domfreedom to dazzle them and be yourself!

When you are packing light for your summer travel wardrobe, an
elegant wristwatch can be the most important accessory that glams
up your look.
This summer, look for ultra-thin watches that are effortlessly
chicwhether you want to make a splash at a poolside or look sharp
in a convertible.
A timepiece with complicated movement is another way for you
to make a sophisticated style statement. Watchmakers ambitious at-
tempts to orchestrate many functions often result in a thousand or
more parts in a single case.
You are wearing poetry.

FASHION
writer Colin McDowell states it
best in his 300-page tome, Shoes:
Fashion and Fantasy. Shoes, once seen as a means of protection
from the elements and support for the body, have evolved since the
Renaissance and Baroque periods into symbols of status and style.
Today, even athletic footwear and boots come in ashy patterns,
designer touch-ups and sleek materials. Platforms were originally
created to keep the wearer out of the muck of medieval streets;
now, heels, wedges and platforms are credited with elongating a
gure and empowering the wearer. The right shoe can communi-
cate power, sex appeal and glamour, and there are a myriad of de-
signers from which to select, from storied cordonniers like Roger
Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo to contemporary icons like Chris-
tian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik.

AST SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, leading
fashion houses presented commendable options for
luxury shoppers to debate over and splurge on. High-
lights were heavy in Paris, as usual, and leading the
pack was Phoebe Philo, who had another hit collection with
sensibly structured daywear that played with boxy propor-
tions. Marc Jacobs Candy Land fun house at Louis Vuitton
consisted of pastel couture and epitomized Parisian crafts-
manship with a slew of delicate, ower-cutout dresses.
Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza
Schouler kept things tted, girly and oral, as did
Dolce & Gabbana and Prada; the latter saw Mi-
uccia Prada clash 50s-era drive-in cinema style
with a feminine edge. Valentinos Pier Paolo
Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri took the
label to a near haute couture level with in-
tricate lace and oral gowns that were el-
egant and fuss-free. Christopher Bailey of
Burberry continued to stress the modern
womans wardrobe staple, the summer
coat, with a variety of belted trenches
that are perfect for unpredictable weath-
er. Of course, the usual legends Karl
Lagerfeld and Oscar de la Renta had
success with themes ranging from sea
elegance to masterful brocade and
tulle magic.

MIDRIFF MADNESS
Its time to show a little skin this seasonand not
in the most likely of places. A bevy of designers elected
to reveal the mid-waist with their creations. While this
look can be tough to pull off (a few extra workouts are
required), it can be sexy and tasteful. A few labels did it
best: Peter Dundas of Emilio Pucci took fashionistas on
a gypsy journey with vagabond lavishness in the form of
two-piece dresses, tulle/lace combos, and bold billowy
organza skirts. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana
envisioned a Sophia Loren al mare for their collection.
Flowery bathing suits, corsets and two-pieces came
down the runway in bold colors. Prada too played
peek-a-boo with midriff outts that had a jukebox/
rock n roll attitude.

SEERSUCKER
Originally pioneered by New Orleans-based clothier Haspel over
100 years ago, the seersucker suit reinvented preppy summer com-
fort. Early endorsers include Humphrey Bogart, Carey Grant and
Franklin Roosevelt. The lightweight, Indian material is durable and
breathable, and it keeps you cool in the sultry weather. Traditionally
crafted in an array of pastels and sky blues, seersucker is a go-to for
dapper men. It easily can be dressed up with a shirt and tie/bowtie in
the ofce or at that special wedding. Nowadays, labels such as Brooks
Brothers, GANT, J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilger list
the seersucker as an American summer staple.

SWIM TRUNKS
For summer 2012, designers kept bathing
trunks short. While many men will ap-
proach above-knee swimming trunks
with trepidation, they need not be fearful.
If you have a streamlined svelte gure,
go for broke and keep things short and
a bit more tted. Shorter trunks can
elongate the body, giving you a more
slender look. (Look no further than the
runway at Dsquared2!) Even select-
ing a pair that drops to the knees can
be an advantage. 2012s swimwear is
bursting with oral avor and tropi-
cal hues. Have some fun!
SUMMER PLAIDS
Go easy on the pinstripes, because the pattern du jour for suits is
without a doubt plaids. From tiny checks to full-sized tartan patters,
this traditional look will remain king through winter. For summer,
incorporate gingham, cotton plaids and lightweight check materials.
Etro, Umit Benan and Canali had subtle plaids that were elegant in
summer cashmere and silk, whereas Frida Giannini of Gucci gave
her checks rockstar appeal. Raf Simons played with a variety of
pattern congurations on his plaid-lled collection shown in Paris.
Walter Van Beirendonck and Jean Paul Gaultier also kept Parisian
plaids alive and well with their collections. Ermenegildo Zegna in-
corporated plaids and stripes on the most subtle of scales on a few of
its ne-tailored suits and jackets.

CARGO FEVER
Cargo pants and shorts, popular in the 90s and 00s, are creeping
back into style. Michael Kors cargo-wearing man was on safari.
The designer presented olive and tan shorts and pants made of airy
fabrics that worked well. Dress your cargos up with a button-up and
tie or keep things easy and casual by pairing them with a casual
tee-shirt and blazer. While all those pockets can be overwhelm-
ing, select a pair that ts slimly to the body to avoid looking bulky.
Stefano Pilati of Yves Saint Laurent provided a prime example of
cargo-military styles that maintained a sleek line.
Shorts as a whole were front and center on the runway, with some
of the worlds most esteemed labels sending out dozens of looks. In
Milan, Marni led the pack, and in Paris, Lanvin Hommes Lucas
Ossendrijver and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garons included
short-shorts.

Designing Dragon
BY BENJAMIN-MILE LE HAY
We explain why interior designer Geoffrey Bradeld is the choice of monarchs
and billionaires and how he achieved success.
23
T
HE MENTION OF GEOFFREY BRADFIELD TO ANY NEW YORK interior
design insider sparks depictions of opulent and fanciful spaces. In a career spanning
some thirty-odd years, he has carved out his own niche in the world of luxury inte-
rior design. It is perhaps inconceivable that Mr. Bradeld, who grew up on a farm in
rural South Africa, wound up dining with European royalty, renovating King Husseins massive
estate in Maryland and sitting on the panel of judges for the Chinas Most Successful Designs
Awards Competition. Mr. Bradeld tells YUE over coffee at his iconic townhouse on Manhat-
tans Upper East Side that he believes a key to his success is enjoying the challenge of bringing
individual meaning to a room. His skill at blending elegance and modernity while valuing local
resources and inuences is rare, and he carefully avoids conforming to a cookie-cutter style.
Geoffrey Bradeld began his young-adult life touring Asia, Oceania, Europe and America
while serving for South Africas regimental army. After he fullled his requirements, he began
working in interior design, and his fascination with design and art grew. For his rst signi-
cant project, he updated the Johannesburg apartment of South African theatre legend Pieter
Toerien. That was at the youthful age of 23. It garnered me a lot of attention. Of course,
everything is relative and I was swimming in a very small pond, explained the designer. It
gave me enormous condence.

Bradeld left South
Africa in 1977 to launch
his career in Manhattan,
a place in which he had
longed to live since his
teens and which be pivotal
to his success. Whilst do-
ing my army training, on
a weekend pass, I saw the
lm Breakfast at Tiffanys.
It was Patricia Neals role
of the rich socialite and
her kept boy, George Pep-
pard. Theres something
so extravagant about the
scene set in that exqui-
site love nest and how she
played it outit made me
want to live in a city of that
sophistication, commented the designer. Making waves in New
York with its stiff competition and social distractions wasnt easy,
but his career soon took off.
In the 80s, Bradeld established his own rm. He soon at-
tracted Fortune 500 clients and oversaw massive refurbishments
at royal residences.
Naturally, there were disasters along the way. Bradeld recalled
a time when his client, the renowned entrepreneur and collector
Frederick Weisman, insisted that a newly purchased Noguchi
granite coffee table be hoisted by crane to a sixth-oor lounge.
I worked tirelessly all day to achieve this complicated maneuver
and ready the place for cocktails, which would be followed by yet
another night at Studio 54. Guests began to arrive, among them
[Andy] Warhol, who by then was a ubiquitous habitu of the party
circuit. When the feat was completed, I xed myself a well-de-
served drink and sank into a sofa. To my horror, I looked down to
witness a black line racing toward me at some speed, like a snake
slithering across the marble surface. The staggering weight of the
granite table had sent a serious crack through the oor! We had to
vacate the building post haste.

What we needed
to nd was a chef
whose style of cui-
sine matches the
values of YUE and
all its unique as-
pects. The cuisine
needed to bring
together China
and New York,
itself a large melt-
ing pot of diverse
cultures. The
food also needed
to satisfy the
demanding pal-
ates of the social
elite, including
celebrities like
Lang Lang and Donald Trump.
The dishes served needed to showcase the creativity and energy
essential to the birth of a new magazine. Lastly, a bit of star power
and name recognition certainly would not hurt.
One chef managed to check off all the boxes. The painstaking
search lead us to the soft-spoken yet highly passionate Chef An-
gelo Sosa, widely known as the fan favorite on Bravos Top Chef
and Top Chef All-Stars cooking competition shows.
At rst glance, Chef Sosa probably wasnt the most obvious pick.
He was born to Italian Dominican parents in Connecticut and was
mentored in the kitchens of many esteemed French chefs. Halfway
into his still very young career, he developed an obsession with Asian
avors, which is now the theme that denes him. For this, Chef
Sosa credits another great chef and fusion innovator, Jean-Georges
Vongerichten: Growing up, I had the spices of Dominican cuisine
in my blood, but my mentor Jean-Georges Vongerichten exposed me
to Asian avors. Sosa also avoids being cast as a chef of any specic
cuisine, instead stating that his style is Dened not by cuisine, but
by avors. Thats also why Chef Sosas most recent cookbook, Flavor
Exposed, is categorized by avor proles rather than the traditional
appetizer-mains-dessert model.
It has become increasingly rare to see chefs unabashedly embrace
the term fusion. 20 years ago, the concept of fusing the culinary tech-
niques and avors of different cultures was loved by critics and diners
alike and helped launch the careers of chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa,
who masterfully blended Peruvian and Japanese avors. As the years
went by, less talented chefs ooded the market with their own fusion
creations, and fusion started to become synonymous with unfocused,
misguided avors. Therefore, it is refreshing to see an accomplished
chef wave the fusion ag proudly. Im a rm believer of fusion, and
will not shy away from it, said Sosa. The foundation is based on ex-
tensive travel, research, and reading, so that I can preserve tradition,
but put a new slant on it.

Yet even Beijing Council could not have anticipated just how ex-
traordinaryor how desiredit was. The scrolls December 3, 2011
auction was unprecedented, with the price of the scroll skyrocketing
from ve million RMB to an astonishing one hundred million, the
highest price in history for a Yuan Dynasty artifact. The scroll was
nally returned to China through its Chinese buyer, having made its
mark as a stunning example of the desire of Chinese art connoisseurs
to reclaim their nations cultural inheritances.
Dong reects on the record-breaking sale: I have encountered
some other collectors and buyers abroad; their impression of Chinas
auction industry at the time was not very positive, and they lacked
a kind of faith in Chinese enterprisesI hope that they can dispel
this misgiving and establish trust in the domestic auction industry. I
think, in the end, all of our hard work will accomplish this.
Beijing Council is not the only auction house making its mark in the
world of art acquisition and repatriation. The major auction houses
Beijing Poly International Auction Co., Ltd. and China Guardian
Auctionstwo of the largest auction houses in Chinahave suc-
cessfully engaged with the American market. Both auction houses
have established ofces in New York City, and both have repatriated
cultural artifacts back to China. Poly Auction has successfully recov-
ered artifacts from the Summer Palace, while China Guardian has
directed the purchase and repatriation of many valuable Chinese
cultural artifacts that had previously been overseas, several of them
dating from the Qing Dynasty and earlier.
China has not only come far in reclaiming its artifactsit has
emerged as a dominant force in the auction world.

UPPER EAST SIDE
Long known as one of Manhattans most exclusive areas, the
Upper East Side (or UES) spans from 59th Street to 96th Street,
between Central Park and the East River, with prime properties
found between Fifth and Park Avenues near Central Park. Build-
ings in this afuent area tend to be older, prewar townhouses and
limestone cooperatives, which have proven attractive to a wide ar-
ray of individuals of high net worth for almost a century. Today,
some of New Yorks most celebrated residents, from Madonna to
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, call the area home.
While co-op buildings have traditionally hesitated to accept in-
dividuals from overseas into their elite coteries, the inux of foreign
buyers into the hyper-luxury market over the past few years has
altered this established norm. New York City is a dynamic place
comprised of hardworking people. I feel our Chinese values match-
up perfectly with those of New Yorkers. says Grace Leung Levin of
Town, a real estate rm.
Buyers looking for tall, new high-rises should generally direct their
attention elsewhere, but those in search of classical renement and
traditional American luxury will feel quite at home on the UES.

UPPER EAST SIDE (CONTD)
For over a century, the neighborhood has housed elite, pedigreed
private schools, including Dalton, Spence, Marymount and Chapin,
all of which regularly send students to the countrys top universities.
Brown Harris Stevens agent Paula Del Nunzio, one of the citys
top brokers, explains the particular appeal of the neighborhood:
What makes the Upper East Side so valuable is that much of it is
landmarked and will therefore remain a low height area with el-
egant cooperative buildings and historics mansion and townhous-
es. The value of residential real estate on Fifth Avenue and Park
Avenue - and the side streets in between - has been proven over
decades and represents a safe investment for the newest wave of
buyers. It is today, as it was in the early 1900s, the Gold Coast.

TRIBECA
On the other side of town, and the other side of the spectrum,
TriBeCa (which stands for Triangle Below Canal) has become
one of Manhattans most fashionable and expensive residential
areas. With good schools, ne dining and sprawling loft spaces,
the neighborhood has boomed in the past decade, with seven- and
eight-gure spaces regularly listed on the market. Raphael De
Niro, a managing director at Prudential Douglas Elliman, sug-
gested several reasons for TriBeCas immense popularity in recent
years. It kind of found that right balance between residential and
commercial, he said. Indeed, the neighborhoods cobblestone
streets and relative lack of retail trafc creates a quiet coherence
not found in many other corners of the city. Mr. De Niro explained
that TriBeCas close proximity to other great neighborhoods like
West Village and SoHo is also a central draw.
Like the Upper East Side, TriBeCas landmark status prevents
developers from building high-rise apartment buildings. Most of the
top residential buildings in TriBeCa, however, are converted indus-
trial buildings, carefully renovated with luxury buyers in mind.
New conversion projects like 250 West and Cobblestone Loft at
28 Laight Street offer uptown-style amenities, including roof decks,
tness rooms, parking garages and full-service attendants. As Ms.
Levin says, Many of my international buyers feel more comfort-
able with the amenities and community feel that a new building
provides.
Aside from the long-settled celebrity residents, the neighborhood
is becoming increasingly popular among foreign investors and
homebuyers, Mr. De Niro explained.

WEST VILLAGE
Like TriBeCa, the West Village offers elegant living outside of
the traditional luxury real estate box. With townhouses lining the
quiet streets, the neighborhood is particularly appealing to families.
Robby Browne of the Corcoran Group, an established broker who
has worked extensively in the area, described the neighborhood in
familiar terms. It really is a village, he said. It just feels different.
Its got a different texture.
While the West Village may indeed reect the citys colorful
character, there are options for those who tolerate only the nest
residential fabrics. Superior Ink, a new development at 400 West
12th Street, offers a unique combination of townhouses and condos
in a sumptuous, full-service setting. Units currently on the market
in the building range from $10.7 million to $35.7 million.
By and large, however, real estate in the West Village is limited
to townhouses and smaller condo buildings. Although townhouses
are rarely delivered to new buyers in mint condition, the investment
may be worthwhile, as Mr. Browne suggests that more and more
luxury buyers are moving to the area. That seems to be where so
many people want to be. he said.

were featured in Watch Week, fteen of which displayed their newest
state-of-the-art timepieces from the international Basel World 2012
world watch and jewelry show in the United States for the rst time.
Until May 4th, connoisseurs, businessmen, casual collectors and citi-
zens witnessed Blancpain, Chopard, David Yurman, de Grisogono,
F.P. Journe, Georg Jensen, Montblanc, and Vacheron Constantin,
among other luxury watch brands, premiere some of their nest
timepieces, watches that will dene fashion for generations to come.
Accompanied by the tunes of resident pianist Ear Roses origi-
nal compositions, guests enjoyed The Ticker specialty cocktail
with ne wines and champagne while checking out the unique
gallery of watches on opening night. At the kickoff event, it was
also proudly announced that Madison Avenue Watch Week is
now recognized as an ofcial New York tradition, a sign of pride
in Madison Avenue as the location with Americas highest con-
centration of the nest timepieces.
