We had a fantastic Opening Week!

The sound of little footsteps could be heard all around the Temple early Monday morning as our Freedom School Scholars set foot on the Stephen S. Wise Temple campus for the first time. They were greeted by our Good Morning chant as they stepped off the bus and smiling faces lined the walkway towards their breakfast room. Guests included community members who made the dream of a Freedom School a reality at Stephen S. Wise Temple, as well as Temple and School staff. We were honored to be joined by our Senior Rabbi Eli Herscher, Councilmember Paul Koretz who aided in our ribbon cutting ceremony, and LAUSD Board From left: LAUSD Board Member Steve Zimmer, Project Director Andrea Sonnenberg, Councilmember Paul Member Steve Zimmer who was our first Koretz, Rabbi Eli Herscher, Rabbi Ron Stern and Site Harambee guest reader. Coordinator Jennifer Smith Though there were a few first day jitters as to what this new program would look and feel like after months of planning, the children and staff were excited for what the day, and week, would bring. We want you to know that our first week was a BIG success! Scholars enjoyed reading their Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) books and classroom activities. They got to know their Servant Leader Interns (what we call teachers) and other classmates. They loved the different afternoon enrichment activities, especially swimming in the pool and our field trip to Skirballs Noahs Ark! We are already off to an incredible start for week two and we hope you will come and visit us at Freedom School soon! ~ Andrea & Jennifer
