Filmmaker shares knowledge with students
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Washington Twp. Sun
Mike Licisyn spends his days
behind a camera now, but it was-
nt always that way.
The 2002 graduate of Washing-
ton Township High School said
his goofy persona often landed
him on stage and at the center of
attention among friends.
But as a kid, he also decided to
pick up his parents video cam-
era, creating mini-movies and
sketches with clay figures.
From there, Licisyn learned to
love all aspects of filmography.
Once he realized he could go to
college to learn the ins and outs of
the field, he was sold.
He studied radio, television
and film at Rowan University and
got involved with the radio sta-
tion on campus.
Once he graduated, he was
ready to make his mark on the big
screen.
Licisyns first production out of
the gate was one he said he felt
many young artists would be able
to relate to.
He released No Footing in 2010,
a movie described as celebrating
artists of all kinds. The film, he
said, is also meant to give inspira-
tion to those who struggle
through post-college life.
As a young artist who graduat-
ed with a degree in art, I thought,
what will I do? It was a struggle Special to The Sun
Mike Licisyn, left, a 2002 Washington Township High School graduate, shoots a portion of No Footing, his full-length independent feature.
During the summer, Licisyn teaches students at the Summer Stage Video Film Production Program at Camden County College in Blackwood. please see LICISYN, page 3

Licisyn developed
online game series
finding my first job as an artist,
Licisyn.
In between filming No Footing,
a film that received many local ac-
colades and attention, and future
assignments, Licisyn worked a
medical video gig.
But then, he got back to what
he loves doing most.
He developed an Internet video
game series, Living in 8 Bits,
which has quite the cult follow-
ing, he said.
He also worked with the Angry
Video Game Nerd, James Rolfe,
who hosts a popular web series.
Theres a small cult following,
and its strangely international,
Licisyn said. If youre tuned into
the weird subculture, theyre the
biggest celebrities for this stuff.
Licisyn can also be spotted
from time to time behind the cam-
era at the Washington Township
municipal building, where he
tapes the council meetings so res-
idents can watch at home.
He does make time for other
freelance assignments, but says
he has really enjoying seeing his
work online.
Thats where Ive steered my
ship. As an independent filmmak-
er, I want to make a living doing
what I love, so I put it on the Inter-
net, Licisyn said.
But as much as Licisyn loves
creating his own films and shorts,
he said he also loves seeing others
be able to do it, too.
For the past five years, hes ded-

Theater group to
perform Mulan
Journey to ancient China with
Mulan, Jr., an action-packed stage
adaption of Disneys award-win-
ning animated movie, sponsored
by Beneficial Bank. Summer
Stage Childrens Theatre presents
this tale of courage, adventure
and bravery July 25 through 27 at
Camden County College.
Audiences will root for Mulan,
played by Radha Prabakaran of
Blackwood, who starts off as a
clumsy, unlikely heroine declared
unfit marriage.
The Huns invade and Mulans
father, Fa Zhou, played by Dylan
Odri of Lumberton, is unexpect-
edly called to serve in the army.
Mulan knows this will mean
certain death for the wounded
war veteran, so she sneaks off
with his armor and sword, poses
as a boy, and takes his place.
The Fa family ancestors,
played by Diana and Alec Pizarro
of Berlin, Darby Pumphrey of
Mullica Hill, Daina Andrew
Ramos-Vassall of Atco, and
Caitlin Riccardi of Sicklerville,
send Mushu, played by Sydney
Copeland-Goodman of Sick-
lerville, a small mischievous,
dragon to protect her.
Under the training of Captain
Shang, played by Joey Campbell
of Deptford, Mulan and her new
friends, Yao, played by Vito Rosel-
li of Washington Township, Ling,
played by Aaron Burt of Glouces-
ter Township and Qian-Po, played
by Tom Berardi of Blackwood be-
come skilled warriors.

Gabriel Echevarri of Washington

Mulan is my favorite Disney
heroine. When I was little, I
would watch the movie over and
over again. Its neat to portray the
person you once idolized. I like
that shes different from the Dis-
ney Princesses and shows that
girls dont have to be girly, said
Prabakaran.
Mulans story is enhanced with
favorite songs like Reflection,
Honor to Us All, and Ill Make A
Man Out of You.
The show has a lot of fun
music, great costumes and sets
that help you feel like youre in
ancient China, said Campbell.
Playing Shang is a wonderful op-
portunity for me because hes so
complex and has a wide range of
emotions from mad to joyful. Its
the most challenging role Ive
ever had.
Shaun Leavy of Berlin directs
the young cast, helping them
meet their challenges and present
a heartwarming production that
celebrates Chinese culture.
Mulans adventure takes place
Wednesday, July 25, 7:30 p.m., and
Thursday and Friday, July 26 and
27, 10:30 a.m. in the newly-reno-
vated, fully accessible Dennis
Flyer Theatre, Lincoln Hall, Cam-
den County College, Blackwood.
The audience may meet cast
members in the courtyard on the
left side of Lincoln Hall after each
performance. The Thursday
morning show features sign in-
terpretation.
In addition to Mulan, Jr., the re-
maining Summer Stage season
includes Disney Heroes, spon-
sored by Bowman & Company,
LLC, August 1-3. Ticket prices for
daytime performances are $9 for
children/senior citizens and $11
for adults. Wednesday evening
performances are $11 for chil-
dren/seniors and $12 for adults.

M
egans Law was, if anything,
an extremely forward-think-
ing way of ensuring that
convicted sex offenders were easily
identifiable wherever they might live
after spending time locked away. Now,
if one state senator has his way, sex of-
fenders would not only have to register
their residential locations, theyd also
be required to identify themselves as
convicted sex offenders on social-
media websites such as Facebook.
We applaud this bill, and hope it ulti-
mately winds up on the governors
desk to be signed into law.
In addition to having to publicly dis-
close sex-offense convictions, the bill,
sponsored by state Sen. Kip Bateman,
R-Somerset, would also require offend-
ers to list, on their public profiles,
home addresses, where crimes took
place and a self description.
While there will be some who say a
bill such as this one goes too far and
is an invasion of privacy we believe
its for the best.
Far too often, we hear stories of sex-
ual predators who use the Internet to
prey on the vulnerabilities of young
people.
A few years ago, the Dateline NBC
specials To Catch a Predator re-
vealed just how many people used the
Internet to set up what they believed
were trysts with young people.
The penalties for failing to comply
with the proposed law are swift, as
well. A sex offender caught with a pub-
lic profile that doesnt identify a
Megans Law status would carry with
it a potential fine of $10,000 and up to a
year-and-a-half in prison.
A similar law was adopted in
Louisiana recently.
We commend Bateman for propos-
ing this bill. And we hope other states
take notice and enact similar legisla-
tion. There is no doubt that by having a
law such as this one on the books, pred-
ators will think twice about preying
upon the young.
And the children of our state will be
that much safer because of it.
in our opinion
Taking Megans Law to Facebook
State Senate bill would require sex offenders to self-ID on social-networking sites
Is the proposed law
too invasive?
A bill proposed by state Sen. Kip
Bateman, R-Somerset, would require
convicted sex offenders to identify
themselves, as such, on social-network-
ing websites. Would such a law be fair?
Students create their own short films
icated many summer days to the kids at
the Summer Stage Video Film Production
program at Camden County College in
Blackwood.
Licisyn said at first he wasnt sure if
hed be able to teach eighth- through 12th-
graders about the mechanics of filmmak-
ing.
After a couple of years, it kind of grew
on me. I get cynical about the industry, Li-
cisyn said. But I see teens falling in love
with movies. Theyre not jaded yet. Its re-
freshing. And it reboots my personal sys-
tem.

film premiere night. The red car-

gets to see each students film on
the big screen.
Its eye-opening because
everything film is second nature
to me, Licisyn said. The kids
see it with fresh and new eyes. I
see ideas from the kids and think
why didnt I think of that?
Licisyn teaches lessons on film-
making and also calls in the pro-
fessionals to reinforce what he
trains campers to do.
Licisyns goal for campers is
that they leave camp having
learned something about film-
making and leave with a complet-
ed film.
It reboots my battery person-
ally. Its a big collaborative effort,
a cauldron of creativity. Most peo-
ple our age are so cynical about
it, Licisyn said.
