He joined Bahujan Samaj Party and was elected as its National General Secretary on the 10th May 2008. On 26th November 2008, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha (Third Term) consecutively. He has served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India from 2006 to 2008. Dr. Gupta is also a member of Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee, since 27th January 2009. He is a distinguished political leader, philanthropist and an educationist.

He attended the International Childrens Games sponsored by the International Olympic Association, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1994.
