The objective of this experiment was to determine the energy loss due to friction when a fluid (water) flows through a straight pipe both experimentally and theoretically. This energy loss results in a pressure drop between two points in a flow system. By measuring this pressure drop by a manometer at different flow rates, the energy loss was found along with Reynolds number and friction factor. Head loss was calculated by us for the experiment using general energy equation and then used Darcy-Weisbach equation to find the friction factor. Moody diagram was used to find the theoretical friction factor and using that value founded by the theoretical head loss by Darcys equation. The experimental and theoretical values were slightly different but they led us to the same conclusions. For a given pipe roughness the friction factor decreases with increasing Reynolds numbers and the higher the fluid velocity, higher will be the energy loss.
