PREFACE

This Guide was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee CH/3, Paints and Related Materials, to augment the range of Standards dealing
with paints for buildings.
The AS/NZS 4548 series has been prepared as a guide for information on the properties
that could be expected from long-life exterior coatings applied to concrete and masonry
surfaces. These product characteristics are to be taken as a guide only, i.e. it is not
mandatory for a product to have these characteristics.
The objective of this Standard is to provide a guide to the properties that might
characterize textured latex coatings.
Because a product is used as part only of an overall painting system, the AS 4548 guides
should not be used as substitutes for a detailed painting specification from the

manufacturer, based on AS 2311, The painting of buildings. Successful specifications are

based on the proven performance of the total paint system, and not on the characteristics
of individual paint products.

FOREWORD

Non-aggregate type textured coatings for concrete and masonry surfaces are intended to
be applied by textured roller or spray to cementitious surfaces that have been sealed in
preparation for following coats of finish. Generally, a latex sealer, such as one
characterized by AS 3730.23, Guide to the properties of paints for buildings,
Part 23: Latex — Wallboard and masonry sealer, will be required. However, additional
substrate preparation may also be necessary.
The alkalinity of freshly prepared cementitious surfaces is frequently in the region of
pH 10 to 12 and requires time to age to a maximum of pH 9. The alkalinity of the
substrate has to be allowed to fall to a level that will not induce permanent breakdown in
the sealer. Insufficient curing time will cause premature failure of the sealer coat and,
hence, the paint system. AS 2311 gives details on the ageing process and other
precautions needed to ensure that the substrate pH is at an acceptable level.

This Guide sets out to provide information on the performance and specifications for a
series of different types of long-life coatings for concrete and masonry. As a Guide, it is
not the function of the document to set rigid specifications for the various paint products
described, rather to provide a skeleton upon which specifiers can build their detailed
specifications. The reasons for this are the following:
(a) Performance requirements for a given product type may well vary from application
to application and from specifying body to specifying body.
(b) Specifications can, and do, change over a period of time as specifiers and
manufacturers learn more about the products and their performance.
(c) Due to the varied emphasis on product performance, Standards that set rigid
requirements are not appropriate. Therefore, technical documents in this area tend to
be written for the informed user. This Guide is written for that informed user.

Australian / New Zealand Standard

Guide to long-life coatings for concrete and masonry

Part 3: Latex — Textured coatings — Non-aggregate

1 SCOPE This Standard provides a guide to the features and typical characteristics of
long-life textured coatings, which do not utilize aggregates, intended for exterior or
interior use on concrete and masonry, when applied by airless spray, hopper spray or
roller in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Paints covered by this Standard are classified as paint Type 38 of AS 2311 and

correspond generally to Australian Paint Approval Scheme specification Type 3 of

GPC-C-117.
Non-aggregate, low to medium profile textured latex coatings are selected for aesthetic
purposes to provide attractive decorative profiles, according to the application technique
used. Application may be by textured roller, airless spray or hopper spray, depending
upon the profile required, and will achieve a spreading rate of 1.0–2.0 m 2/L
(1.0–0.5 L/m 2).
This type of coating is generally specified in a system including a topcoat of material as
characterized by AS/NZS 4548.2 where maximum resistance to moisture ingress and dirt
pick-up is required.
These coatings are not intended for use on horizontal surfaces where water ponding is
possible. They are normally specified in systems that may have a sealer and multiple
coats.
NOTES:
1 AS/NZS 4548.5 provides a test which may be used to check the cure of concrete and
masonry surfaces before applying the sealer.
2 Appendix A provides guidance on the use of long-life coatings for concrete and masonry.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The documents referred to in this Guide are listed

in Appendix B.

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Guide the definitions given in AS/NZS 2310
and those below apply.
3.1 Aggregate — an inert mineral filler with a particle size greater than 250 µm.
3.2 System — the coating recommended by the manufacturer which will have a minimum
specified spreading rate and which normally consists of a sealer, a textured coating and
possibly a finish coat.
3.3 System integrity — characterized by an absence of failure of intercoat adhesion,
interface to substrate failure or coating cohesion failure.
3.4 Working up — any lifting, mixing, dissolution, incorporation or other interaction
observed between two paint films during or after the application of the overlying film.

4 TYPICAL PROPERTIES AND CHARACTERISTICS

4.1 Composition The paint should consist essentially of pigments, extenders and latex
binder in aqueous suspension. The product should meet the requirements of the Uniform
Paint Standard in the Standard for uniform scheduling of drugs and poisons issued by the
National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for a paint that is not classed as
a Schedule 1 paint.
