Review of Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Joint Australian/New

Zealand Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of
amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users
ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any amendments thereto.
Full details of all Joint Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards
Australia and Standards New Zealand Catalogue of Publications; this information is
supplemented each month by the magazines ‘The Australian Standard’ and ‘Standards New
Zealand’, which subscribing members receive, and which give details of new publications,
new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Joint Standards, addressed to the head office of either
Standards Australia or Standards New Zealand, are welcomed. Notificationof any inaccuracy
or ambiguity found in a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard should be made without
delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

Paints and related materials— Methods of test

Part 0: Introduction and list of methods

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee CH/3 on Paints and Related Materials to supersede the 1994 edition.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

The AS/NZS 1580 series of Standards deals with methods for testing paints and related
materials. It includes documents that describe test conditions, sampling procedures and
provides guidance on the applicability of the methods. The methods are intended primarily
to test materials and establish compliance with relevant Australian/New Zealand Standards
Licensed to David C Kemp on 11 May 2002. Single user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

or other specifications, however they are also appropriate for general laboratory use and for
investigational purposes. The methods may be used in appropriate specifications in an
Australian/New Zealand Standard, Government Paint Committee Specification or other
contractually related document.
To facilitate information retrieval, the methods are grouped as follows:

AS/NZS series Description of grouping

1580.100 Test conditions, preparative procedures, film thickness
determinations
1580.200 Liquid products —Determination of physical properties
1580.300 Liquid products —Determination of composition by physical methods
1580.400 Cured coatings— Performance by mechanical testing
1580.450 Cured coatings— Performance by durability testing
1580.500 General products —Determination of composition by chemical
methods
1580.600 Cured coatings— Determination of visual properties, e.g. colour,
gloss, finish

Methods that determine a specific property of a material, or the same property for different
materials, are differentiated by a further level of decimal number in the method number.
In this edition, individual entries have been highlighted to show changes from the previous
edition where —
(a) Standards have been revised;
(b) Standards have been reconfirmed; and
(c) new Standards have been added to the AS/NZS 1580 series.
