MATH3403 | Assignment 3

This assignment is due at 9am Sept. 8 at the lecture. It is worth 3% of the total assessment. Late penalties are listed in the prole. Clear and consise presentation of mathematics (or any work) is an important skill. Of the 30 marks associated with this assignment, 2 marks will be allocated for clarity and consiseness and 1 mark for neatness (in proportion to number of questions completed). 1. The equation for heat ow with convection in 1D geometry is u u u =k 2 v . t x x If the ends are held at temperature zero, the boundary condtions are u(0, t) = 0 and u(L, t) = 0 while a prescribed initial temperature is given by u(x, 0) = f (x). (a) Use the method of separation of variables to obtain two differential equations, and write down the appropriate boundary conditions. (b) Convert the spatial boundary value problem to the standard Sturm-Liouville form. (c) Determine the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the solution, and write down the general form of the solution for arbitrary f (x). (d) Find the coefcients of the solution when f (x) 1. 2. Suppose y1 and y2 satisfy y1 + 1 y1 = 0 y2 + 2 y2 = 0 y1 (0) = 0, y2 (0) = 0, y1 (L) = 0, y2 (L) = 0.
