Lung Cancer

Jamie Zambrano, EMT Period 5

Worldwide, Lung Cancer is the most common cancer related death in men and women. Lung Cancer is also held responsible for the death of 1.3 million deaths annually, since 2004. This deadly cancer mainly affects your lungs but it can spread throughout different parts of a humans body. There are different types of lung cancers, such as Small Cell Lung Cancer and Non Small Cell Lung Cancer. These are also the main types of lunch cancers. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing up blood, weight loss, and pain in the abdomen lead up to a persons death. As said earlier Lung Cancer may affect other parts of your body. If it grows through the airway, this will cause heavy breathing problems. Lung Cancer not only affects those people whom smoke cigarettes. Lung Cancer cases have been found in patients who receive secondhand smoking, by genetics, and radon gas. Patients that still smoke after receiving the news of having lung cancer and are receiving treatment for it, tend to have a shorter survival time. People who completely quit smoking during the time of diagnosis have a better prognosis then those who dont. The way to diagnose lung cancer is by performing a chest radiograph. This is the first step if a patient has talked to their doctor about some symptoms they

have been having. What a chest radiograph does is that it enables to see an obvious mass. If there is no finding of anything but still have a highly suspicion of having lung cancer you might be right. What someone then can do is to perform a CT scan and/or bronchoscopy; this can also provide the tumor type. Lung Cancer is a curable disease. The type of therapy or surgery received depends on the type of tumor a person has. Chemotherapy and Radio therapy are common therapy used during the diagnosis. Lung Cancer was a cancer uncommon before the invention of cigarettes. It wasnt a distinct disease until the year 1761. In the present time people are advised to quit smoking. There are many facilities open and willing to help smokers to quit. This help, has helped many people quit and stop themselves from getting lung cancer. Lung Cancer or any cancer is a very dreadful situation to be in. I believe people who smoke cigarettes should at least try to get help or attempt to lower down the amount of cigarettes smoked. The people around smokers are also affected by them and what they do. Cigarettes are dangerous to us and our community.
