    Summer Palace

    The Summer Palace is located in Beijing, about 12 kilometers from the center of the city. It was used as a retreat for the rulers of China, giving them a place to go in the countryside, while still being close to Beijing. The gardens in the Summer Palace have been there since at least 1150, and about 50 years later, a place was built there. The Summer Palace was designated as a world history site in 1990. It is a beautiful example of Chinese architecture and landscaping.
