FIRE AT LYNEMOUTH POWER STATION
At around 9.50pm on Thursday, 23 August a fire broke out at Lynemouth Power Station. One Rio Tinto Alcan employee sustained an injury to his foot as he was directing emergency services personnel to the scene. The fire was contained in one area of the power station and at no stage was it a danger to the surrounding community. The fire was extinguished at around 3.00am on Friday, 24 August. Lynemouth Smelters power demand, which has been significantly reduced since the closure of the plant in March, is being met by imported power. An investigation into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage to the plant is underway.
