Introduction
This brochure has been designed to offer the visitor an
effective way of making the most of his stay as he discovers
the astonishing riches awaiting him in the western isles of
the Canarian archipelago, fragments of land anchored to
the ocean’s bed and caressed by a mild, benevolent climate.

El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma form part of the

archipelago known in ancient times as the Fortunate Isles
because their steady temperatures and abundance of
exuberant landscapes were believed to be a gift of Fortune.

The three islands described here are blessed with fine forests
of fossil flora which became extinct in the Mediterranean
Basin thousands of years ago but are exceptionally fertile in
these luxuriant valleys. Although beaches are few and far
between and lack the splendour of those found in the
archipelago’s eastern islands, the visitor will be drawn to them
for their unassuming aura. The smaller islands belonging to
the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are true havens for the
enjoyment of nature, deep-sea diving, starry skies,
backpacking, rural tourism… .

In geological terms, they are

The first inhabitants called

the Europeans landed on the
