To add integers on a number line you must look at the problem. The first number in the sequence is where you start on the number line and the second number is how many spaces you go in which direction. If it is an integer, you go to the left, and if it is a whole number you travel to the right however many spaces that the number says. Look to some of the problems below for instance:

When a positive counter and a negative counter come together the number becomes higher or lower depending on the number. If the number being added to is an integer, it becomes higher, and if the number being added to is positive it becomes lower. In this example, the yellow counters are positive and the red counters are negative. Another easier way to do it is cancel out the opposites and your answer id the amount of either color left over.

when a negative and a negative counter are added together they become less than the original value.
