Preparing For Enema

The wonderful aspect about enema is that it can be done EASILY without much preparation. It should be done in the morning on an empty stomach and preferably AFTER answering nature's call (unless severely constipated). While for usual practice, there are no special diet requirements, however, for a Complete Detoxification, the following diet observations should be followed and enema should be Preferably done over the weekend :

Enema - How a cleansing enema ensures the BEST body detoxification to help you live healthier and longer ...naturally!!
An enema is a discreet and private method of self-administered colon cleansing. Most importantly, it is extremely Easy to do and Home Enemas are extremely popular. Almost everyone who undergoes the experience has almost identical responses of "Wow! I feel hooked already"

Why Enema
Our modern lifestyle has given birth to an ever-increasing bouquet of health disorders where diagnosis is vague. Physiological ailments such as lower backaches, indigestion, flatulence, acidity, chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome are widely rampant. So are psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, irritability and other neuroses. These - coupled with our prolonged unhealthy lifestyles - has given birth to systemic disorders such as obesity, faster Ageing, Cancers, Rheumatoid Arthritis and auto immune disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Crohn's Disease, etc.

These disorders have been linked to an insufficiently clean colon and a poor detoxification of the body. Experiences show that Enemas benefit greatly in such cases and help in maintaining youthfulness. The good part of our modern lifestyles is that Enemas are NOT a taboo any longer!

The "What & How" of an Enema

In this process, water (or the prescribed liquid) is inserted into the rectum through a colon tube or nozzle. The colon tube or nozzle is connected through a hose to an enema bag or tub which holds the liquid. While lukewarm saline water is the most recommended, effective and safest for cleansing, certain additives may be prescribed for specific conditions as well as for therapeutic enemas. Depending upon the quantity of liquid required, an enema may be classified as a low volume or high volume enema. Low volume enemas may be sufficient for mild constipation. Certain therapeutic procedures such as coffee enema for cancer treatment and liver detox are also low volume procedures which do not require deep filling of the colon, and work on only the lower part of the descending colon, sigmoid colon and the rectum. A high volume enema, on the other hand, is meant for deeper cleanses and detoxification of the entire colon. It is used as part of cleansing programs or then to correct chronic imbalances created by an unhealthy lifestyle or other factors such as medications, personal disposition etc. An effective fasting program should also be accompanied by enemas to assist in the detoxification of the body. A fasting program slows down the excretory system, preventing the pushing out of the feces easily. It is here that an enema can help greatly. Enemas are best done in the morning soon after answering nature?s call. A relatively clean colon helps realize the fullest benefits of an enema by allowing an unobstructed flow of the water into the colon. If necessary, it may be wise to have a mild laxative the night before to assist in a clean colon before the enema process is undertaken

Enema Dangers
Are enemas dangerous? All the reported dangers of enemas can be traced to indiscriminate or improper practice. In our opinion, there has been no citation for enemas being harmful, if done as recommended. Possible Dangers listed are injury to anus or rectum due to improper insertion of the nozzle. Common sense should dictate this aspect and the golden rule applies ? never push when in pain; an easily implemented practice Another contraindication reported is for people with heart or kidney ailments, as enemas can cause an electrolytic imbalance. Once again, this only pertains to indiscriminate use or to special people who need specific medical advice before an enema. " Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! The Enema Kit I purchased arrived very quickly. First time I've ever done a colonic. Very easy, clean and comfortable and thorough cleansing. Instructions helpful. I've struggled with Candida for years and now know the benefits of a healthy ecosystem , Which needs to start with a clean healthy colon. Thank you again. " J.Malone,Cascade, WI

MYTHS about Enema

Myth #1: It is Difficult Reality: Quite contrarily, it is one of the easiest methods of thorough colon cleansing. Following the instructions as provided in the enema instruction booklet will make you aware how wonderfully easy the procedure is. Myth #2: It is Habit Forming Reality: In nature cure, patients who were given enema for months did not take even a day to leave it or live without it. Yes, if enemas are done incorrectly and without discretion, then rectal muscles can lose their natural disposition. Myth #3: It Weakens the Intestine Reality: It never weakens the intestine and rectum; instead taking enema rationally activates and strengthens them. Enema greatly contributes to the strength of the digestive system. It improves the blood circulation not only to the large intestine but also to the organs of the whole digestive system. It improves the digestion of food and also improves the secretion of the digestive juices/ enzymes.

How to do??
Home Enemas can be done by an easy-to-use Home Enema Kit, which beginners find extremely suitable. A detailed Instruction Booklet accompanies your enema kit which helps in making the process unbelievably easy and even fun!!

How to take an Enema?

The best time for taking Enema is in the morning 1-2 hours before breakfast or in the evening, 2 hours before dinner. Fill the pot with water. The temperature should be according to the need (Please see Types of Enema). For General Cleansing, the water should be lukewarm (97oF-100oF). Hang the Enema Can from a height of about 1 meter. (Optional) Add the amount of herb and its extract to be dissolved in enema water (See "Herbs in Enema"). Apply any oil (vaseline) to th of the enema catheter for lubrication. Ensure the catheter size is comfortable. (Size 10 or 12 is fine) Turn the Enema nozzle on to ensure that water coming out of the catheter in free flow without any air bubbles. Then turn the nozzle off. Now, practice the posture recommended in the enema instruction booklet, and slowly insert the lubricated Enema catheter approx. - of its length into the rectum and turn the enema nozzle on. You will feel the water reaching in your upper rectum and left part of the intestine (colon). If you feel the water is enough for intestine or if you experience a faint desire to evacuate, then turn the Enema nozzle off. If you feel that the water in the pot is insufficient, turn the nozzle off and move the catheter out. Fill the Enema can once again with water; and insert the catheter back into the rectum. The passage of liquid into the large intestine should take 5-15 minutes.

Enema Difficulties
Some common discomforts felt while taking an enema:

Pain in the abdomen:

Sometimes abdominal (large intestine region) pain is experienced while taking Enema.

Solution:
If you feel pain while taking Enema, the first thing to do is to turn the Enema nozzle off. Then, press the region of pain with four fingers or palm and rub the area. After that continue massaging your abdomen in an anti clock wise direction. Sometime pain is the outcome of a small amount of air taken in as water finishes from the Enema pot.

Solution:

Be careful that the Enema Pot should not get completely empty. A stainless steel enema can is best for the purpose which you can buy individually by Going here OR it comes as part of your whole Enema Equipment Before beginning ensure that water flows smoothly to remove any air bubbles and turn the enema nozzle off.

Water Comes Out :

In some cases due to hard tassel matter or in cases of less rectal muscle elasticity in post stroke cases, water may come out.

Solution:
As water starts coming back, turn the Enema nozzle off and take the Enema Catheter out. Pass out all the water in the WC. Following this, two things to do to carry on taking Enema:

Always introduce Enema catheter in Rabbit (Shashankasana) Pose. This is shown in the enema instruction book that comes free with your enema equipment. Let the water flow in regulating the tap and then turn off the Enema nozzle off after 30 seconds. Then turn it back on after 2-3 minutes.

Water does not flow in or is obstructed

Sometimes the intestinal walls block the opening of the catheter

Solution:
To overcome this, try moving the catheter a little out and then back in.

How often to take an Enema?

General
In the Nature Cure Hospital, Enema is recommended once to twice a day. But for a normal healthy person, looking for better health and well-being, should take Enema once a week. It is always better and convenient to practice it on weekends.

Hyper acidity or conditions of excess constipation indigestion.

People suffering from any of these conditions should practice enema twice to thrice a week or on alternate days for 1 Month to 3 months. Once the symptoms start disappearing and you begin to feel good, the frequency should be decreased and nature should be allowed to take over.

Note: Enema is not habit forming. Instead, after cleansing the large intestine, the intestine is actuated to perform better. The peristaltic movement (moment of contraction and relaxation of intestine which moves the faecal matter toward the rectum and Anus) also improves.

Types of Enema
Enema varies according to the temperature of the water.

Cold Enema:
50f-65f (or 10C-18C). It is helpful in decreasing fever and it is also beneficial in inflammatory conditions of the colon especially in cases of dysentery, diarrhea, ulcerative colitis and hemorrhoids.

Caution:
a. Don't turn on the Enema nozzle fully. Take 10-15m. time undergoing Enema practice. b. In the case of ulcers and hemorrhoids, take 10gm of dried Neem leaves (powder) boiled in 1 liter of water, & then allow to cool. Strain this water and then use. Warm Enema:
97oF-100oF(or 36oC-38oC) is recommended for general fitness and well being once a week. It helps to cleanse the rectum of the accumulated tassel matter. This is not only the safest system for cleaning the bowel but also improves the peristaltic movement of the bowels and thereby relieves constipation.

Hot Enema:
104oF-115oF (or 40oC-45oC) is beneficial on sudden occasions such as stoppage / obstruction of tassel matter and intestinal gas in which you may also feeling be mentally uncomfortable. Hot Water Enema is beneficial in relieving irritation and pain due to inflammation or rectum, painful hemorrhoid. It also helps leucorrhoea in women. It is also beneficial in general abdominal pain, abdominal pain due intestinal gas and pain of kidney, liver and spleen.

Caution:
a. The quantity of water used should be - liter and the enema duration should be for 10mins. b. In the case of ulcers and hemorrhoids, boil 10 gm of dried neem leaves (powder) in 1 litre of water, & then allow to cool. Strain this water and then use.

Graduated Enema:

In graduated Enema the amount and temperature of water is slowly decreased up to the 15th day. It is started with 2 liter of water and decreased by 125 ml per day up to 125 ml. on 15th day. In the case of temperature , it is slowly decreased from 100o F to 70o F (i.e. 2o per day). It is highly beneficial in cases where intestines are over dilated and it improves the intestinal function.

Who should avoid enemas?

Pregnant ladies: In pregnancy (especially up to 7 months), enema should be strictly avoided as it increases the risk of abortion substantially. Persons suffering from an extreme condition of piles and rectum ulcers. Persons suffering from conditions of intestinal obstructions. Very weak people (after conditions of acute illnesses or otherwise)

Herbs in Enema
Neem and Fenugreek have extraordinary effects on intestinal health. Neem: 10gm of dried neem leaves (powder) is boiled along with 1 liter of water & then allowed to cool. This water when used after straining is extremely effective in conditions of amoebic intestinal infections and Ulcerative colitis. You can order your pouch of the 100% natural Neem Leaf Powder. Fenugreek: Soak 2 Tea spoons of fenugreek seeds overnight in a litre of water then boil this water in the morning. Allow it to cool and then strain the mixture before use. This mixture is an excellent anti bacterial and anti inflammatory agent.

Colon Cleansing
What it is & Why?
The act of assisting the colon (large intestine) to do its natural job, which is ridding the body of unwanted toxic matter including feces, is colon cleansing. It is widely believed that an insufficiently clean colon results in toxin build up which is the root cause of disease.

Do we need it?
The question should be - not "we" but do "I" need it? Every body condition is different, so it is logical and natural that you should approach the issue in this manner; not the conventional mass medicine one shoe fits all' approach. Are you sufficiently clean? Do you pass two (or atleast one) fulsome stools every day? Do you feel sufficiently cleaned out? If you answered no, colon cleansing is almost a suggested must! Are you suffering from inexplicable systemic disorders such as heavy headedness, dullness, lethargy, moodiness, or physical symptoms such as gas, acidity, inexplicable pains and aches, skin outbreaks etc.? Do you feel the need to boost your immune system? If you answered yes, colon cleansing is definitely a possible way out!

Techniques of Colon Cleansing

Some of the popular techniques are:

Colonic irrigation & Colon Hydrotherapy Colon cleansing supplements & laxatives Enemas Yogic practice of Basti

Is it Safe?
Colon cleansing owes its origin to over 3500 years ago, when the concept of "intestinal auto intoxication" (re-absorption of toxins from the intestine) due to an unclean colon was well known among the Egyptians & Greeks. It is extremely unlikely for an unsafe practice to survive all these years. What is unsafe is extreme indiscrimination and the consequences of that - NOT of colon cleansing per se. Sadly, in our age, we tend to be extreme - going overboard one way or the other. Moderation seems to have taken the backseat...and this explains the extreme viewpoints.

Objections to Colon Cleansing - The Naysayers, Dangers, Myths etc.

Colon cleansing has its fair share of critics. They raise objections, varying from dangers of colon cleansing to questioning the benefits. We highlight the most common of these concerns: #1: Incorrect ractice & Overuse may do more harm than good Sure, but isn't that a matter of common sense; excess of anything is bad. #2: Colon cleansing washes off the good flora and the probiotic bacteria ... After all cleansing can't distinguish between good & bad, eh? THIS is where proper education comes in. After a cleansing routine, the system must be allowed to rest. Diet should be of soft, cooked foods with natural fat (like clarified butter) to sufficiently line the mucus epithelial membrane and to allow the flora to grow back, which will happen in a matter of hours. Raw foods should be avoided to reduce the chances of any secondary infection source. That's it - just a little precaution. To use this to ridicule the whole colon cleansing practice is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. #3: The colon knows its job. Why interfere? How we wish things were so simplistic. Disease would then never be a reality! The sad truth is that due to our lifestyles, dietary patterns and environmental factors, our elimination systems are not working as efficiently as they should. THIS is the reality and assistance to our elimination systems can do wonders. #4: Laxatives & Colon cleansing supplements have side effects An objection more about the manner of colon cleansing rather than the practice itself. For those skeptical (and may be true in some cases), skip the use of cleansing supplements - use enemas as a way of safe colon cleansing!

In conclusion
As mentioned, most of the objections relate to indiscriminate use. But more importantly, the objections seem to emanate from people who have never undergone colon cleansing themselves - an unfair way to judge a practice.

People undergoing colon cleansing swear by the wonderful effects to their health. Among other, benefits include:

Lighter, younger feel Freedom from nagging physical health disorders like constipation, acidity, aches & pains, skin problems, arthritis etc. Relief from psychological disorders such as depression, moodiness, dullness & lethargy etc. In addition, colon cleansing regimens are popular to treat issues such as weight loss, cancers, and systemic disorders. So, using the golden rule of discrimination and moderation, colon cleansing can be a wonderful way towards improved health.

Abdomen & Colon Cleansing

There are some excellent abdominal cleansing techniques to detoxify your body and stimulate the digestive system. They are strongly recommended by naturopaths and yogis to help take charge of your own health. Besides firming up the abdominal muscles, abdominal and colon cleansing help in,

Curing Constipation Indigestion Acidity Stomach pains and bloating Sexual Disorders The yoga techniques for abdomen cleansing are those which MUST be learnt under expert guidance. Needless to say, these techniques if learnt well are the single most important way to manage your own health and keep diseases and health disorders at bay. Some of these yogic techniques are briefly described below for general awareness. But for those seeking immediate relief without the inclination to seek out more permanent and 'liberating' steps, there is a way through Ayurveda Ayurveda offers an excellent way to treat stomach pains, abdominal bloating and stomach gas throughAmritdhara Supplement Drops. Yogic Techniques for Abdominal Cleansing Kunjal (Stomach Wash)

A very simple technique once learnt, kunjal involves the drinking of several glasses of saline water on an empty stomach, the first thing in the morning. Immediately thereafter the vomiting reflex is induced so as to throw out the ingested water. Not as yuk, as it seems (because the water thrown out is quite clear, unlike the case where gunk comes out when you vomit due to eating something non-agreeable), this technique is very effective for stomach health. Besides, it is very beneficial for respiratory disorders, thyroid disorders (as it helps to balance the thyroid gland) and several other health issues To know more on Kunjal (stomach wash), read the e-report that you get when you subscribe to the HealthAndYoga Newsletter. Nauli (Abdomen Churning)

This is a method of controlling and toning all your internal organs. it involves churning or contracting different abdominal muscles through breath and muscles control. This is like sucking in your abdomen and moving the muscles in and out by pushing forwards. But without breathing. Nauli is believed to increase the flow of life force in the body so that the mind remains clear. The muscle movements and breath control generate heat in the body, stimulate and improve the functioning of the digestive system. It is believed to increase the blood flow to the digestive system and build up the heat, which is responsible for maintaining digestive health.

Abdomen churning helps treat constipation, indigestion, acidity, nervous diarrhea, hormonal imbalances, flatulence, and sexual and urinary disorders. It also energizes and calms you during emotional disturbances. It improves your posture and also relieves menstrual problems. Ideally, do this exercise early in the morning on an empty stomach or wait for at least five to six hours after meals.

Dhauti (Food-Pipe Cleansing)

This is the method of cleansing your esophagus and stomach. It involves swallowing a 5-metre strip of cotton gauze which has been soaked in water or milk to soften it, and then pulling it out again so that the deposits left on your stomach walls are removed. The best time to do this is on an empty stomach in the morning, once or twice a week. Drink a glass of milk after doing it. This cleansing method stimulates the digestive system and helps alleviate the symptoms of Asthma. While the Dhauti Cloth Strip is NOT provided to individuals through this website, Yoga schools interested in obtaining this to teach their students may contact us by using the "help" link on the top of the page.

Yoga Management of Acidity

By Dr. Vijay Singh Gusain N.D.D.Y., Faculty Member, IFNHY Have you experienced belching of a sour and sometimes bitter taste or a burning sensation in the throat, chest or stomach? Well, what you're suffering from is Acidity. Acidity is caused by the excessive secretion of Hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Prolonged acidity can cause chronic indigestion, arthritis, gout, IBS, ulcers and even false angina pains. There are a number of mind and body specific reasons why acidity may occur. These are: Your mind body type - According to eastern philosophy, people who have a predominance of the fire element or the air and fire elements in their body are more susceptible to this malaise. Hyperthyroidism - excessive secretion of the thyroid gland. Anxiety, hostility, anger and stress. Constipation, flatulence or Intestinal gases. Taking food without hunger. Artificial stimulants and fractional feeding - Artificial stimulants like smell or the thought of nearing the food time can create acidity. Excessive intake of stimulants like tea, coffee etc. Excessive intake of food that increases the fire element such as fried foods, spicy or pungent food, oranges, tomatoes, spinach etc. Excessive intake of food that increases the air element such as kidney beans, horse gram, white rice, sprouts etc. The Yogic Management Yoga deals with the underlying causes, whether they are related to mind or body. This is contrast to modern medicine, which uses suppressants for symptomatic relief. This can impair the digestive system and lead to complications.

The Yogic Management of Acidity involves developing: 1. A routine 2. 3. The right eating habit Dietary and Lifestyle changes

Importance of detoxification
By Arun Goel Modern science now believes that the cause of degeneration, decay and premature ageing lies in free radicals in the body. This overrules the earlier concept of germ theory. According to this theory, accumulation of toxins in our bodies creates free radicals. Free radicals are dysfunctional molecules (they have a missing electron). These are highly unstable molecules and in an attempt to regain stability they devour electrons from surrounding molecules. This creates more damaged molecules and in a cascading effect, this leads to damaged cells and this causes degeneration. How free radicals are created Free radicals are created as a result of accumulation of toxins in the body. Toxins, themselves, are a result of our living style, environment and emotional patterns. With the kind of food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and our emotional pulls and pressures, certain hormones are secreted that have a tendency to leave behind toxins. The accumulation of toxins in our body is, therefore, natural. We CANNOT escape from this. These toxins gradually form layers around the lysosomes inside the cells. Lysosomes are structures inside the cells that flush out the waste products from the cells. When toxins form coats around these structures, they block the membrane of the lysosomes from performing their natural function. This leads to the build up of toxins and the creation of free radicals. Detoxification With the accumulation of toxins taking place all the time, it is necessary to find a way to rid the body of these toxins and restore the cells to their normal functioning. It is necessary to REVERSE this cascading effect of damaged molecules. Otherwise, this can result in various health disorders and life threatening diseases. In fact, most of the degenerative diseases such as hypertension, arthritis, diabetes, immunity disorders, strokes, arteriosclerosis and heart ailments can be traced to this one reason. Modern medicine has devised a therapy called 'Chelation' to detoxify the body. It is performed by injecting the body with a chemical that isolates the free radicals in the body to prevent them from causing further damage to other cells. It also restores the free radicals to their normal form. Elimination of toxins is aided through the urinary system. Detoxifying naturally Our bodies carry out this 'Chelation' naturally. In fact, Chelation is a process of nature. Tears, sneezing, mucus, sweat, menstrual blood, urine and faeces are all nature's way of detoxification. The basic actions of our bodies such as breathing, digesting, circulation and excretion are forms of Chelation and

our lymphatic system is an excellent Chelating agent just like the chemical that is injected in to our bodies. If we can find a way to have these working in an optimum manner, we should be able to free our body of the accumulation of toxins and thereby disease. Yoga and detoxification Yoga methods and techniques offer precisely these effects. It is surprising that ancient yogis knew of these effects thousands of years ago and have practiced methods that help to keep optimum health. Hatha Yoga fulfils detoxification through the practices of Asanas (Yoga poses), Pranayamas (Breathing techniques), Mudras and Bandhas. While Pranayamas create the right vibration in the cells by working on energy flows, Asanas free up blocks and obstacles in the flow of this energy. Yoga has powerful detoxification techniques of nasal irrigation (Jala Neti), enema (Basti), and the Stomach wash (Kunjal). These are some of the most effective techniques to prevent disease and ageing. In fact, while techniques of Chelation therapy work at a physical level only, yoga has techniques which help in detoxification at all levels including mental and spiritual. Techniques such as 'Kapalbhati' help in increased oxygenated blood flow to the brain and help in 'purifying' the mind. In this Information Age, it is important that man realizes the wonders behind his own body. He should use this knowledge to develop a faith in the natural processes of the body and assist it naturally, because the body has a way to respond better to natural therapies.
