senior class in the College of Engi-
neering and Architecture, which will
be formally presented to the Uni-
versity of Minnesota just before
today' s game. Kenneth Foster,
Eng. 1926, is in charge. The flag
will be raised while the band plays
"The Star Spangled Banner." The
University of Minnesota congratu-
lates the Class of 1926 engineers on
their choice of a gift to Minnesota
and on the precedent they have es-
tablished for leaving a useful and
decorative memento of their college
years. After some debate, it was
decided to erect the flagstaff at the
open end of the Stadium where it would be seen by thousands and
would add a needed fini shi ng touch to the scene.

Today We Battle for the Jug
MINNESOTA and Michigan meet in football today for the eighteenth
time. Despite the length of this series, which began back in 1892,
these two teams have played only about half as many games as have
Minnesota and Wisconsin, due to several long periods when there were
no games. The six to six ti,e of 1903, which undoubtedly made the series
famous, also caused its interruption, for Minnesota and Michigan did
not meet again until 1909 and 1910, after which there was another sus-
pension until 1919. Minnesota won that year, 34 to 7, but has not since
downed the doughty Wolverines.
Despite the heavy advantage of Michigan in the win column, she
has scored but 258 points against Minnesota, to 131 for the Gophers.
Minnesota's worst defeat came in 1921 to the tune of 38 to o.
The history of the 1926 doubleheader between these two famous
footbaII teams has been written In part on Ferry Field, where the first
game was played on October 16, ,a Michigan victory by the score of
20 to o. Today wiII see the last chapter written, a chapter which every
loyal Minnesotan hopes will have the justly celebrated happy ending.
Michigan enters the fray chastened by Navy's 10 to victory, and
encouraged by subsequent victories. Minnesota found itself after the
Michigan defeat, broke the three year tie with Wisconsin and trampled
over Iowa by a score of 41 to o. It goes onto the field today to give
everything it has in an effort to down the jinx that has prevented it
from winning over Michigan more than once since 1893.
It is interesting to notice i1'1 this connection that Minnesota has been
victorious in its most recent football games with every other conference
university except Michigan. The list follows:

The theoretical blot on this record is that Purdue beat Minnesota
in 1897 in the last game between these two institutions, but that is so far
back in the annals and the game has been so changed in recent years
that Minnesotans may cross their fingers in contemplating the item.
A summary of the seasons's performances seems to indicate that the
Minnesota line, boasting two men for every position, must be about the
equal of Michigan's. In the backfield Yost sends Friedman, Gilbert,
Molenda, and Rich or Webber against Almquist, Peplaw, Barnhart,
and Joesting; with Ny<iahl, Arendsee, O'Brien, Gordon, and Geer in
reserve. Minnesota's backfield has proved its splendid merit in recent
games, but there isn't much that one can take away from that Michigan
array of talent. Molenda has been shifted from fullback to right half
to lead tke interference, with the heavy Webber the plunging full-
back's position. Gilbert is about as fast as they come and Friedman
has been All-American.
Oosterbaan and Flora line up against Captain Wheeler and Haycraft
of Minnesota at the ends. Ooster.baan was All-American last year and
Flora wasn't only because a team couldn't be too well crowded with
Michigan players. Yet Minnesota's ends may be depended upon to hold
their own against this dashing pair and will probably outplay them into
the bargain.
Fortunately no line that Michigan can throw in is better than Minne-
sota's when Hanson and Strand are at guards and either Hyde and
Gary or Johnson and Ukkelberg at tackles. MacKinnon and Hulstrand
have shown that 'they can hold their own at center, and Michigan has
lost Captain Brown of 1925 fame from that position.
All in all, today's game will be another of ;those historic battles that
come so regularly every year and remain historic at least until the football
crowds of the next season pin the emblem of history onto another and
later schedule.

How to Watch the Scoreboard

Clock.-There are four fiftten-minute quarters. The hand moves
from 15 to zero for each quarter.
The pointer at the bottom moves from 10 to 0 as the ball advances,
showing the position of the ball after each play in the same manner as the
side-line markers.
Penalties.-Following is a list of penalties that may be inflicted, each
one having a number. When a penalty occurs, the number corresponding
to the correct one on this program will be inserted opposite the word
PENALTY on the scoreboard.

Gopher Coaches Starred in Play
Every man on the University of Minnesota coaching staff has heard
the football field resound with cheers for his exploits back in the happy
undergraduate days of the past.
In his playing days as a lineman at Dartmouth, Dr. Spears won All-
American honors. George "Potsy" Clark, his first assistant, scintillated
at Illinois as one of the memorable predecessors of Red Grange in the
Blue and Gold backfield. Sig Harris, who will direct the destinies of the

Sherman Finger, trackcoach and headcoach of the freshmen in football
stands out in the annals of Western Conference foo:ball as the Chicag-o
fullback on the teams piloted to victory by the great Walter Eckersall.
Merton Dunnigan, also a freshman coach, was a strong- lineman on
Minnesota teams of the past decade.
Most recent among the Minnesota players, both in period of play and
in addition to the squad, is Louis Gross, Minnesota's fig-hting tackle of
1922, '23, '24. '
Ed Lynch, who will help Dr. Spears with his ends this fall, is a
former star end at Dartmouth, where he learned his football under
Spears' tutelage. As a fJlayer Lynch was among the best, and as a coach,
he helped turn out the great Dartmouth eleven which last year was ad-
mittedly the strongest in the country.
