Chile's 8.8 Earthquake and recovery UPDATE!

How did this earthquake happen?


Happened on February 27, 2010 . Occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile. A magnitude rate of 8.8 that. Lasted about 90 seconds. The 8.8 magnitude hit six Chilean regions which together make up 80% of the country's population. The earthquake took place along the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonics plates, that location was moving at a rate of eighty millimeters (about three inches a year).

The Devastation of Chile


The destruction and devastation left of Chile after the earthquake occurred was a normal tragedy for the country. In the past, Chile had many earthquakes in the past that hit many of it's area, but this was one of the biggest magnitude that shook the country. Many Chileans were very devastated by this one earthquake causing havoc everywhere and mostly in the capital of Chile, Santiago.

Chile has deployed thousands of troops and police to restore order in the city of Concepcion after looters ransacked several shops for food amid growing anger over inadquate relief following Saturday's earthquake.

Dozens of buildings collapsed and parts of the country are without power and electricity weeks after 8.8-magnitude quake.
