Lessons Learned from the Emilia Romagna Earthquakes in May 2012

Out-of-plane failure of a masonry facade wall of the town hall building in Sant'Agostino, Emilia Romagna

Last May, a series of earthquakes struck the region of Emilia Romagna in the western Po valley, an industrial area in northern Italy. Historical curches and monuments as well as modern warehouses have been particularly affected. Wide spread soil liquefaction occurred in some villages. Valuable lessons can be learned from the damage patterns, because the seismic hazard of the affected region is comparable to that of the higher earthquake zones in Switzerland and the level of shaking reached about the magnitude of the seismic design event of these zones. The presentation will summarize the findings from the reconnaissance mission of the Swiss Society for Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (SGEB). It will mainly focus on observations of various liquefaction phenomena and of the seismic performance of new and historical masonry buildings, prefabricated warehouses, and bridges.
