Neuburger Eng Comp 2 102-127 20 September 2012 Response Essay Harrison Bergeron Upon reading Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., it is clear that the world has changed drastically. Each person has been changed to be equal, to be balanced and everyone is the same. The world would be a terrible place if we were all forced to be the same. Throughout the reading it is made clear that society would suffer, though no one would be lower than one another. If we restrict people from being great, just so the less great wont feel left behind we can cause society to crash. When Harrison breaks free from his handicaps he feels empowered. He states, I am your Emperor! (297). Harrison feels empowered for the first time. And when he is free the world is fun again. When everyone is forced to be equal we neglect ourselves the things that make us happy. It is clear that everyone is happy when they exploded in joy and grace (298). When the world is forced to lessen itself just so we can make others feel better about themselves we fall apart and lose focus of what is truly beautiful. 200
