Section 6 English : Reading Comprehension

The Gupta kids were not accustomed to snow. At most they had seen snow in their Himalayan town of Dharampur was an inch or so each year. Even that was quite infrequent and it never snowed more than once or twice each winter. And when it did snow once in a while, the temperature was always too warm for the snow to remain accumulated. It never really got below freezing temperatures in Dharampur. Yet the funniest part was that even this slightest bit of snow was reason enough for schools to get cancelled and businesses to close down. No one knew how to drive in that kind of thing. However, for young Amisha Gupta, it was never enough; because the snow that came was always too sparse to go sledging or build a big snowman or build one at all. How she wished it snowed more and more. Then one cold February night a miracle happened. An unexpected gush of cold winds from the Himalayas and moist winds from the Arabian Sea converged on the northern parts of India and created a magnificent storm of a millennium. All the Gupta kids knew when they woke up the net Saturday morning that there was 15 inches of unbelievable snow right there on their front lawn, across the street and as far as their eyes could see. The Gupta household was in shock. People were grossly ill-prepared for this kind of an eventuality. They had no shovels to dig, no salt to spread to keep from slipping in the driveway. They were simply clueless. While the adults seemed awed and paralyzed; the kids were having a blast of a lifetime. Amisha discovered that tying a rope to a metal trash can, made a wonderful sledge. Rohan realised that if he put his feet in a polythene bag before wearing his rain boots he could keep them warm for longer. The kids even made a huge snowman and gave it their Dads muffler and Cap to wear.
