Merritt RCMP are looking for a suspect in a robbery reported Wednesday night in Merritt at the Old Barley Market Cold Beer and Wine Store. Just before 11pm on October 17, 2012 a robbery was reported at the Old Barley Market on Quilchena Avenue. A male entered the building with a steel pry bar just before closing, asked for cash and left the building immediately with a cash bag. RCMP members were on scene within moments of the call being dispatched and were able to have Police Dog Services attend from Kamloops. Due to minimal traffic at that time of night, PDS was able to track the suspect to the Double D Motel on Nicola Ave. The track was lost at the motel. Video surveillance has been recovered from the robbery and the suspect is believed to be a white male 5'6"-5'7", 130 lbs. He was wearing a grey hoodie under a ski jacket and sunglasses. The ski jacket had beige shoulders and arms with a red stripe down both sides and a blue body. The incident is still under investigation and anyone with any info is asked to contact CrimeStoppers 1-800-222-8477 or the Merritt RCMP, 378-4262. The Pumpkin Guy, aka Lucas Handley of 3 Bar Farms, is holding Merritt's first Pumpkin Patch, Saturday, Oct. 20, 10am-4pm. The pumpkin patch is located at 2124 Tomkinson Rd; just 15 min. from town, in beautiful Sunshine Valley (turn left onto Sunshine Valley Rd East and follow the signs). Hayrides to the pumpkin patch to select your pumpkin, Crystal Leier Photography will be on hand taking photos. Fun and games to entertain kids of all ages throughout the day. Admission $2 for adults, $1 for children, and $5 for a family of 4. Chemical-free pumpkins start at $2. Chemical-free produce at our booth in the vendors corral, still available: squashes, potatoes, tomatoes, and apples, baking. Concession with hot dogs, hot chocolates & pop. Proceeds are to benefit the "Support Patti" fundraiser. Environment Canada says the first significant snowfallis forecast to hit the Okanagan Connector and Coquihalla highways this weekend. Freezing levels will still be high Friday but are expected to drop significantly Saturday. Temps will dip below freezing Sunday & Monday, then inch up again by mid-week here in Merritt.

The Merritt Mountain Bike Assoc. is spearheading an effort to replace 9 broken or tiring bridges on Godey Trail this Sat. Oct. 20 starting at 9am, and is assembling materials and volunteers to tackle the job. The MMBA, a registered society, is leading the effort to restore this signature trail to improve both safety and access for all users.The bridges protect the environment from the high traffic of bikers and hikers that would otherwise be crossing the creek beds. if you plan on attending you will need work gloves and proper footwear, andif you choose to bring a small hatchet, mallet, or Pulaski, park at either the gravel parking lot (west of the coquihalla) and walk through the culvert under the highway, or travel up the gravel portion of Fox Farm road until you see the signs.
