Pygmalion effect

The Pygmalion effect is a concept studied about a lot of people and it caused different opinions. The idea is that the teacher have big expectancies from his students. The effect is named Pygmalion because of the legend which sais that Pygmalion was a very talented sculptor who said that he will never get married and he dedicated all his time to his passion. He build a statue of a woman's body and that statue was so beautiful that he fell in love like crazy with it. He asked to the goddess Afrodita to bring the statue to life and after that Pygmalion married her. Shaw wrote a play where the main character was a young teacher who meet a beautiful flower seller and he decided to help her to speak correctly and this is exactly what he had done. The researchers from the educational domain associated the name of Pygmalion with the study of the expectancies and the effects that they can produce. Rosenthal and Jacobson inserted the concept of "Pygmalion effect" to show that the teachers expectances can be things that become true. They made a study named "Pygmalion in the class-room" . The research was at Oak School, a public primary school. All the students from that school took part to an intelligence test. This test was presented to the teacher as an instrument which can predict if the students will make progress in the next years. The researchers chose then 20 % from the students and they said to the teachers their names and also the researchers said to the teachers that those children are very inteligent and they can do spectacular progress. The researchers lied to the teachers and all those names were chose at random. When the students were evaluated, the researchers discover that those 20% had big progresses only because the teachers though that those students are "gifted". The research had an extraordinary effect. Why do you think that those 20% from the students have that progress and their classmates didn't have it? The teachers opinion and the marks may be changed when the teacher knows the student. When the test is corrected by 2 teachers it can be a difference even for 2 points because there are a lot of teachers who put the notes fictitious. Also the teachers might be wrong when they have 2 classes, one with a high level and one with low level. If the teachers take classes to a low level school, they will think that the students can not be able to have big performances and they will do a strict evaluation. We all say that the teacher have to know everything about this students, do you think that this is a good point? Think about these childrens who are gypses, who live in a foster house, or the students who have to work!
