Introduction
Solar cells are gaining more popularity as an effective alternate source of energy that does not pollute the environment. The more recent advancements in solar cell technology is the invention of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) also known as the Gratzel cell. These type of cells were invented by Michael Grtzel and Brian O'Regan at the cole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne in 1991. In quantum efficiency terms, DSSCs are extremely efficient. Due to their "depth" in the nanostructure there is a very high chance that a photon will be absorbed, and the dyes are very effective at converting them to electrons. Current dye synthesized solar cells face a challenge when it comes to efficiency. The dye used needs to be able to efficiently produce energy with minimal waste and complication. The challenge was to increase the efficiency of the dye-sensitized cells and create a more environmentally friendly solution . The common components found in DSSCs are ruthenium and iodine. The most expensive component of standard DSSCs is the ruthenium dye, which also happens to be a toxic heavy metal. Ruthenium poses environmental and economic disadvantages to an otherwise elegantly designed solar cell which serves as inspiration to search for more widely available and environmentallyfriendly dyes. In our experiment, we will replace the dye used in the current Gratzel Cell with retinoic acid.
Retinoic acid is a metabolite of vitamin A (retinol) that mediates the functions of vitamin A required for growth and development.Furthermore, it is nontoxic and widely available. For the reasons above, it is

believed that retinoic acid can increase the efficiency of DSSCs.By using retinoic acid as an alternative dye in DSCCs, we can cut cost and use natural sources that can be found abundantly on earth. The scope of the study is to use retinoic acid as an electron transfer dye in the dye-sensitized solar cell. The limitation
