A SPOOKTACULAR DAY! On Wednesday, October 31, the students of David Lloyd George were involved in a Halloween Spooktacular Day! This years classes had the opportunity to participate in a Halloween costume parade, a dance and many Halloween events in their classes. This year, we had many students dressed up in silly and spooky costumes. The costumes were incredibly creative with lots of effort and detail. Our costume contest winners were Rachel from Div. 13 and David from Div. 1. Thanks to all the staff and students for a great day! WELCOME NEW PAC EXECUTIVE Thank you to all the parents who attended the October PAC meeting. Thank you again to the members who attend regularly. A special thank you to Theresa Page, Former PAC Chair, for continuing to attend to support our new council members. We hope to continue to see new parents at future meetings. Come and join in our

discussions about new initiatives at the school, such as the future direction for technology at our school. Our PAC elections took place at the meeting on September 19 and we are pleased to welcome our new executive: Chair/Treasurer Tamara Shepheard Vice Chair Open Secretary Renata Arnold Fundraising Coord. Open SCARE HUNGER FOOD DRIVE The DLG Spirit Leaders are hosting a food drive beginning on Halloween day. This event will continue through the month of November to help raise food for the Vancouver Food Bank. We will be collecting cans of food and dry food items. The Food Bank has also requested items such as paper products, cleaning products and toiletries, like toothpaste, etc. We hope to fill even more boxes than we did last year! Thanks for helping us make a difference in our community. PERSONAL DEVICES AT SCHOOL Some students have been bringing personal devices to school, such as iPods, iPads, cell phones, game devices and

laptops. Although these items are not prohibited, we have rules around when and where they can be used. Cell phones and game and music devices must be turned off during the school day or they may be confiscated. Note taking devices must be used appropriately and must contain school appropriate apps and programs otherwise they may be confiscated. We would also like to emphasize that the school cannot take responsibility for the security of your device or the replacement cost should your device be lost or broken. These items are your responsibility. Therefore, we ask that you think carefully before sending such expensive items with your child. DLG SPC COUNCIL ELECTIONS The School Planning Council is an advisory body whose major responsibility is to represent the school community in developing, monitoring and reviewing the School Plan for improving student achievement. The School Growth Plan sets out priority goals that focus on student achievement for the school year. The School Planning Council provides advice to the school with respect to: allocation of staff and resources and matters included in the Boards accountability contract relating to the school and educational services and programs in the school. The School Planning Council holds a minimum of three meetings annually. One of the members must include a PAC executive member. Two other members are required for the SPC and are elected by the parent community. The criteria for Board approval of the school plan includes setting goals that are: specific and achievable; attainable within a reasonable timeline; and focused on improving student achievement. The rationale for goal selection must be based on data, performance indicators and targets that are congruent with the goals. The School Planning Council does not engage in discussions regarding personal/confidential information on students, parents, teachers or other employees, or complaints about individuals or personal matters. We recommend that the participants commit to more than one year. At this time, we would like to call for nominations for the 3 positions. If you would like to nominate a parent for this position, please contact the office by Friday,

November 16, 2012. The nominees must agree to run for the position. Nominees will be contacted by the office. Voting will be held on Wednesday, November 21 at the PAC meeting. A ballot box will be brought to the meeting for ballots. In the event that only three people are nominated, they will win by acclamation and no voting will be required. The results of the election will be announced at the end of the PAC meeting and will be posted in the December newsletter. The Immunization Clinic will be held at David Lloyd George School on Thursday, November 1, 2012 for Grade 6 students. A consent form was sent home with Grade 6 students a month before the clinic. This form must be signed and returned for your child to be immunized. If your child is being immunized by your family doctor or if you have any further questions, please contact Pat Brunsdale, our local health nurse, at 604-321-6151. COLD AND FLU INFORMATION At this time of year, colds and flu are very common. Most people with colds and flu get better quite easily but some do not. Sometimes pneumonia or other serious complications may develop, especially in people who already have a health condition, such as asthma. Colds and flu spread in the following ways: through the air when people cough or sneeze; therefore, cough onto the back of your hand or into your arm. by touching the nose/face and moving the germs or viruses onto the hands. by touching infected objects. Cold germs can live for hours on objects, such as pencils, books, toys or tables. When children with colds touch their runny noses or mouths and handle objects, they can spread these germs. Colds and flu seem to spread more easily when they first start, such as when children first feel feverish, notice a sore throat, ear ache, runny nose, or begin coughing and sneezing. Please keep your child at home during the early stage of his or her illness to prevent the spread of colds and flu to others. One of the most effective preventive measures is to wash your hands with soap as frequently as possible to get rid of any germs you may have picked up. HALLOWEEN SAFETY I would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for helping to keep DLG a safe place. Thank you to the parents who contacted the police when they saw unsafe behaviour at the school. We were very fortunate to not have any vandalism happen at the school during Halloween. JUNIOR AND SEINOR CHOIR DLG is offering both Jr. and Sr. Choir to any students interested. Practices

are held on Thursdays during lunch time. Listen carefully for reminders on the P.A. for practice times. Thank you to the following teachers for making music come alive at DLG: Ms. Wing, Ms. Nitins, Ms. Chow, Ms. Scott, Ms. Vickars and Ms. Liu. VOLLEYBALL TAKES OFF AT DLG We are thrilled to have volleyball again this year. Thanks to Mr. Landreth, Ms. Muzika, Ms. Kenon, Ms. Poetschke, Ms. Mah, Ms. King, Ms. McHardy and Ms. Cheng for sponsoring this sport. The practice games have already begun. Please feel free to come and cheer our teams on after school. Go DLG Hornets! FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT The DLG PAC is once again offering fun-filled Family Movie Nights. Students are welcome to bring their pillows, blankets and their own popcorn bowl. The gym will be arranged with mats, benches and chairs. Students attending must be accompanied by an adult or they will not be allowed in. We look forward to seeing you at the movies! LATE FRENCH IMMERSION REGISTRATION AND INFO NIGHT: If you
have a child in Grade 5 and are interested in a Late Immersion Program, the District will be hosting an information meeting on Wednesday, November 7 from 7:00-8:00pm at Tupper Secondary School. This is a great learning opportunity that promises intellectual challenge and fun learning a new language. Brochures will be coming to your school to give some more information or you can go to the VSB website www.vsb.bc.ca. Registration will start in November and go until the end of January. It is not a first come, first serve basis but all registrations will be collected along with a written letter by the student which includes their reasons for wanting to participate in a Late Immersion program and a copy of their last report card. General Gordons info night is on

Wednesday, January 9th from 7:00-8:00pm in the gym. At General Gordon we have 60 spaces for Grade 6 students. If we have more applications there will be a draw in the beginning of February.
