Mrs Hs Phonics Group Spellings - Suffixes and Plurals Its not necessary to actually learn all 21 words each

week, just focus on the root word and see what changes before you add the suffix. Words ending with an e - you take the e away before you add the suffix. Words with a short vowel sound need 2 consonants before you add the suffix so you double the last consonant.

Words ending with a y - you change the y to an I then add the suffix. Plurals - Words that have a hard sound at the end like p, t or k for example - you just add the s Words that have a soft sound at the end like s, x or sh for example - you add es.

Please note that the children still need to be learning to read and write all of the High Frequency Words from the back of their pirate spelling book as a continual process.
