DISCUSSION PLAN

P.Ts Roll No.-76 Class- lX Topic- Sound

Subject- Phy.Science Date- 29/11/2010 Time- 35 to 40 mins.

General objectives
To develop scientific knowledge & scientific attitude among students. To create interest towards the study of physical science. To make them use their knowledge in daily life. To lay foundation for higher classes.

Specific objectives
Students will be able to define the sound. Students will be able to tell properties of the sound wave. Students will be able to demonstrate the propagation of sound wave. Students will be able to recognize low pitch and high pitch sound.

Previous Knowledge Testing

Everyday we hear a lot of kind of sound. Can you tell me some sources of sound? By which processes, an object can produce sound?

P. K. Testing Contd
Can you produce sound without utilizing your energy? Define sound.

Announcement of the topic

Students today we will learn and discuss about the sound

Sound

Sound is a form of energy which produces a sensation of hearing in our ears.

Propagation of sound
The matter or substance through which sound is transmitted is called a medium. The medium can be solid, liquid or gas.

Sound wave

Sound waves are characterized by the motion of particles in the medium and are called mechanical waves.

Medium to travel

Sound is a mechanical wave and needs a material medium like air, water, metal etc. for its propagation. It can not travel through vaccum.

Sound waves are longitudinal waves

The individual particles of the medium move in a direction parallel to the direction of propagation of the disturbance. The particles do not move from one place to another but they simply oscillate back & forth about their position.

High pitch sound

The faster the vibration of the source, the higher is the frequency and higher is the pitch. Thus a high pitch sound corresponds to more number of compressions and rarefactions.

Low pitch sound

The slower the vibration of the source, the lower is the frequency and lower is the pitch.

Recapitulation
How sound is produced by school bell & how it propagates in air? Name some musical instruments which produce sound by vibration and also name that part of the instrument.

Home work
Explain why is a sound wave called a longitudinal wave? Draw wave diagram for high pitch and low pitch sound.
