Initial Ideas for my Music Magazine

What type of magazine do I want to create? From my research, I am interested in creating a music magazine that focuses on pop music. However, I have found two magazines that I like; Billboard and Top of the Pops. Billboard is aimed at young adults, while TOTP is aimed at children and preteens. I am interested in creating a magazine that combines the two I want the upmarket, world famous artists and sleek look of Billboard but with the fun, gossipy content of TOTP. I feel that there is a niche market for this, as my magazine will appeal to teenagers who are too old for TOPTPs childish style but too young for Billboards sophistication.

Target Audiences
Billboard
The target audience is teenagers and young adults, from about 18 25. It features mainly pop and chart music, however it does feature interviews from other genres. It is targeted mainly at girls, but many men have also graced the cover. It is also used by industry professionals to collect sales information and figures. The target audience are interested in clothes, style, going to concerts and pop music. The magazine caters for this by including style pages, concert reviews and loads of features on pop artists.

Top of the Pops

Readers aged between 10 -14 87% girls, 13% boys The magazine targets these children by using lots of pink and purple colours on the cover, and having images of mainly girls on the cover mainly pop princesses which these young girls will look up too and aspire to be like. The sell lines all relate to gossip and looking glam or make over tips which will appeal to young girls as they want to look like these girls on the cover. Lots of acronyms like omg are used which are representative of how the target audience talk.

Billboard Magazine The History

Billboard was founded in November 1894, by William h. Donaldson and James Hennegan. It was called Billboard Advertising and it was a trade paper about bill posting, hence the name. Later, it began to carry news of outdoor amusements, a major consumer of billboard space. Eventually Billboard became the paper of record for circuses, carnivals, amusement parks, fairs, vaudeville, minstrels, whale shows and other live entertainment. The magazine began coverage of motion pictures in 1909 and of radio in the 1920s. When the jukebox was invented in the 1930s, The Billboard began publishing music charts. They only published three genre charts: Pop, Rhythm & Blues, and Country & Western. Amusement Business soon folded, but was struggling at the start of the 21st century. Shortly after got reduced to monthly publications, and stopped publishing. Billboard magazine continued to publish music charts, and is now a hugely influential and bestselling magazine in the USA.
