Seminar 6 Discussion Questions (40 points total):

Part I (30 points total):

a. Post a response to “Predictors for Success” on page 567. I am curious what you, as
adult learners, think about the use of SAT as a predictor for college success. Do you think
this is a good predictor for success for nontraditional students? What may be more
accurate predictors for college success for adults who are coming back to school?

I ‘don’t think that this is a good predictor of success for us “nontraditional students”. We
aren’t the same as typical students we have different goals, a more experienced point of
view, and possibly kids. (lol) more accurate predictor could be gpa, class load, or
maybe graduation rates.

b. Give an example from your work or home of two variables that have a linear
correlation. If you were going to draw a regression line of those two variables—describe
what the line may look like. For example, where would it hit the y-axis? Which way would
it lean and how far? Explain what the different parts (y-hat, x, b0 and b1) of the equation
mean in context to your specific example.

I would use the correlation of the amount of diapers changed at night to the number of sippy cups
of milk drank at night. It would be a perfect positive correlation. It would not cross the x or the y
axis.

X: the number of sippy cups of milk

y-hat: the number of diapers changed a night
b0: how many more diapers changed per sippy
b1: positive slope between 30-45 degrees

Part II (10 points total):

Part II will be your question to the group, just like we've done in previous weeks. The DQs have
been good—thank you! Please ask a question that reinforces a concept we are learning this
week, or reinforces a procedure we need to be comfortable with in the calculations. If you had to
tutor a classmate—what would you ask to really drill in what we are learning?

Are there aspects of your life that you’d be able to use correlation to help track cause and
effects with?

Also in your own words define “y-hat”.
