Ama Nyamekye, executive director of Educators 4 Excellence-Los Angeles, issued the following statement today on the teacher evaluation agreement announced between the Los Angeles Unified School District and United Teachers Los Angeles:
"The District and UTLA have taken a step in the right direction. This agreement opens the door for schools to have critical conversations about measuring student growth, and includes opportunities for more teacher input on tools for measurement, which E4E Members have argued for in their own policy recommendations. However, we have serious questions about the frequency of feedback, which may result in some teachers not getting input on their practice for up to 5 years. No professional wants to go five years without feedback and support. No student wants their teacher to go five years without getting feedback on how to improve instruction. In addition, we look forward to learning how this agreement will enable differentiated performance ratings that are critical for providing differentiated professional development and identifying teachers who are ready for leadership opportunities and teachers who need intensive support." ### For far too long, education policy has been created without a critical voice at the table the voice of classroom teachers. Educators 4 Excellence (E4E), a teacher-led organization, is changing this dynamic by placing the voices of teachers at the forefront of the conversations that shape our classrooms and careers. With a quickly growing national network of over3,500 educators united by the E4E Declaration of Teachers Principles and Beliefs, E4E teachers can learn about education policy and research, network at E4Es event series with like-minded colleagues and important education policymakers, and take action by advocating for teacher-created policy recommendations that lift student achievement and the teaching profession.
