Don’t Miss Out On Our
God-Given Destiny
W hat has the Lord destined
for us individually and for
our church and nation? If we are
not careful, we may land up missing
what God has destined us for.
As we come to the end of 2008, I am reading
Deuteronomy 1 again. It is the beginning of Moses’
swansong, just before he leaves this world to join the
Lord he has loved and served. The Israelites that he
has led for 40 years are about to pass through the
River Jordan to enter the Promised Land.
The Lord has been good to the EE ministry
in our nation. Over the last 20 years we have trained
more than 2095 clinicians and 4985 trainers. There
are 71 active churches, committed to equipping their
members to share their faith and financially support-
ing EE and the training of other church leaders, pray-
ing that what each of them is benefitting from imple-
menting EE might be experienced by other churches.
Recently, Malaysian EE churches and individuals
contributed USD10,000.00 to printing EE training
materials for use in mainland China.
Like the children of Israel, we have come a
long way. And like them, we need to hear Moses’ last
words because
it contains a
warning that,
having come
thus far, we are
still in danger
of missing out
on God’s des-
tiny for us.

Having Made Good Progress Is Not
The Same As Fulfilling Our Destiny

19 Then, as the LORD our God commanded us, we set out
from Horeb and went toward the hill country of the Amorites
through all that vast and dreadful desert that you have seen,
and so we reached Kadesh Barnea. 20 Then I said to you,
"You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the
LORD our God is giving us. 21 See, the LORD your God
has given you the land. Go up and take possession of it as the
LORD, the God of your fathers, told you. Do not be afraid;
do not be discouraged."
For the past
40 years and despite
difficulties, the Israel-
ites had been making
progress. They have
come from Egypt and Vietnamese Clinic in Butterworth

king of Bashan. They are thanking the Lord, and
rightly so, for all His blessings and for bringing them
thus far. It is very tempting to rest on their laurels, to
be contented with what they have achieved.
By many accounts, EE in Malaysia has done
well. This is being recognised by believers inside and
outside the country. Recently one of our Malaysian
churches was awarded the D. James Kennedy Minis-
try of Excellence Award, only the fourth church in
Asia to be so awarded. Four individuals are receiving

Growing Stronger Than Ever
in memory of Dr. D. James Kennedy...
2007 was a momentous year and
a difficult year. On September 5, our
Founder and President, Dr. D. James
Kennedy, went home to be with the
Lord.
In spite of this loss, EE was secure. Dr.
Kennedy made sure that the EE leadership was
in place. This man, who stood strong in defense
of faith, family, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
was a leader who built other lasting leaders.
As we face our first year without him,
we can say with confidence that EE is as strong
as ever. Recent accomplishments and new de-
velopments make it perfectly clear—there is no
slowing down in reaching every person with the
Gospel.
During a 15-year period, from 2000 to
2014, it is estimated that EE will conduct more
than 20,000 leadership training clinics. ―It is
amazing what God is doing through this minis-
try,‖ said Rev. John B. Sorensen, EE President.
Doing the math sheds light on some
incredible results, results once thought of as
improbable. Take 20,000 clinics and multiply
them by 30 to 40 individuals trained at each
clinic (a conservative estimate). You begin to
get a small glimpse at the numbers of people
multiplying themselves in churches all over the
world.
One small EE training center in Indo-
nesia has been training people at a high rate.
―The head of our Indonesia ministry said that if
we continue on this path, Indonesia will be-
come a Christian nation,‖ John exclaimed.

derful results are the millions of people, trained
in EE all over the world, who use EE in their
daily lives. ―The secretary of one of our Board
Members was trained in EE 30 years ago,‖ said
John, ―and is still leading people to Christ.
These are numbers that are not recorded any-
where!‖

through this ministry in the first 46 years. I be-
lieve that the next 46 years will be even more
remarkable,‖ John said.

I represent EE Interna-
tional, and this award is
only given to two
churches per year in the
continent of Asia. It has
only been given to about
three churches in Asia:
one in Korea, one in Manila, one in Hong
Kong, and you will be the fourth recipient of
this award.
As I thought this morning what verses
befit this occasion, what verses illustrate or give
a clear picture of this church, I thought of the
verses in Ephesians 3:10-11, which says this - it
is God’s intent, that now in 2008, through the
church, His manifold wisdom, His great wis-
dom, will be made known to the rulers and the
authorities in the heavenly realm, through His
eternal purpose accomplished in Christ Jesus,
our Lord. It is God’s intent that now, through
the church FGT, His manifold wisdom will be
made known to the rulers and the authorities in
the heavenly realm.
Stuart Briscoe describes those verses in
this way. Imagine God in heaven sitting at a
table with all the rulers and the authorities in
heaven. The old guys with their robes and
beards, and they are sitting there, and God gets
His projector out and He starts showing slides
to the rulers and the authorities. He shows the
universe, and the rulers and the authorities say,
―O God, that’s great!‖ He says, ―Wait a minute,
I want you to see a little globe in the middle of
the universe.‖ And He shows a picture of the
earth, and the rulers and the authorities say, ―O
God, that’s great!‖ He says, ―No, no, I want you
to notice something...‖, and the camera focuses
in on Malaysia, on Kuala Lumpur, on Petaling
Jaya, on a church called FGT. And the rulers
and authorities say, ―God, what is going on

EE Training Amongst the Vietnamese

Batu Muang :

A part from the regular training and 19 trainees ; 12 professions

weekly Bible teaching, an Evangelism
Explosion (EE) training was conducted
for our Vietnamese church members between
the end of August and early September this year
in two places in Penang: Butterworth and Batu
Muang. The EE team that came to give the
training comprised of six members from Viet-
nam.
It was a blessed training. The EE train-
ing in Butterworth was held in two and a half
days, and in five nights in Batu Muang. Besides
learning how to evangelize and share the Gospel,
the trainees were also taught on how to cope
with the persecution in Vietnam. Every trainee
had to memorize the Gospel outline by heart.
Among those who accepted the Lord,
some had been to Church several times or had
been exposed to the Gospel through reading
tracts or watching our freely given out Jesus film
(with 8-minute OT introduction) and other Bible
-based VCDs.
The plan to follow up on these new
believers is through visitation. We are keeping in
touch with them and encouraging them to attend
our service and discipleship sessions.
After the training, many of the trainees
said that they are now confident to share the
Gospel with their family and friends, and even
their roommates and anyone they meet.

Sis. Daisy Chan of Miri Gospel
Chapel shares her experience….
I never expected myself to get
involved in Kids’ EE, as I am
not good at handicrafts. I’m in
charge of the Children Worship Service in my
church, not because I like kids, but because
nobody else wanted to be in charge. So I was
pushed into it. There’s always a beginning for
everything. So, I got involved and tried my best
to do the job well, with God by my side. Get-
ting myself into Kids’ EE was a different mat-
ter. On one occasion sometime last year, I met
Sis. Chien Poh Choo, who is one of the Kids’
EE Clinic Teachers. We were talking and shar-
ing, and I told her of my involvement in the
Children Worship Service. She told me that it
would be an advantage to know Kids’ EE if we
are to be in the children’s ministry. One day in
July this year, I don’t know what made me re-
read the tract ―Forever Friends‖, but God
spoke to me through it. I was so moved by the
story that a six-year-old could understand Jesus
and His gift. I was in tears and I knew God
wanted me to get in the Kids’ EE Leadership
Training.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself through-
out the whole training, even though I was very
slow. I have never been good at handicrafts.
Both my left and right hands could never seem
to co-ordinate well. Time was so tight and we
were so fully occupied that very often I could
not finish my craft on time. God sent several

angels (Team Leaders) to
help me. They did my
―Crown‖, my ―Chain of
Sins‖, my ―Lifeboat‖, and
others. HOWEVER, I
managed to make my ―Big
Ears & Eyes‖ by myself,
though I had to staple and
undo it several times to get
it right. But I did it! And I
did most of the coloring
too. I am confident that
given more time, I could
finish them all!
I learnt lots from
our ever-ready, ever-
faithful and ever-cheerful
teachers. Ladies, you are
such wonderful teachers. I
enjoyed learning from you
all. I really am touched by
your enthusiasm and dedi-
cation. As for the Team
Leaders, they were so car-
ing and helpful in every way to guide, assist and
encourage us. I salute you all. All of you make a
good and effective team. All of you have set a
good example for me to follow.
The end of the training is not final but
the beginning of a new journey. I don’t know
what lies ahead, but I am equipped now. I hope
my passion and enthusiasm stays on, so that if I
am needed anywhere, I can say ―I am ready!‖
Sis. Daisy Chan is currently a home-maker, and is a
grandmother with two grandchildren. She serves in the
Sunday School, EE ministry and other areas in church.

n the beginning, I wasn't
really interested in joining EE
because I know it needs a lot
of brain power to memorise
everything, and I never liked
memorizing. However, after all the
forcing from my friends, I decided to give it a
try. It was quite relaxing at first, with the junk
foods and tea breaks all the time, until we were
told to find a prospect to do OJT everyday. It
was stressful and made everyone so nervous,
but through this EE, I've learned how to share
to my friends effectively. I know that I'm not
sharing the wrong facts with them and the
questions that I ask gets them thinking.
Although it was quite tough for me during the
oral test, but I thank God for Seaw Chin and
my partners William and Pastor Nono for
helping me when I really needed help. True
enough, all things are possible with God.
Kelly is 15 years old and is involved in
Royal Rangers, the music team for Youth Alive,
and her school’s Christian Fellowship.

WHAT
introducing Xee...

IS….
E arly this year the EE International
Board approved the release and
launch of a brand new product to
be named “Xee”. X stands for many things,
e.g. Generation X, but also for “the un-
known”.
In 2006, I had the privilege to be
part of a group of some 20 people from all
over the world put together to discuss the
foundations of a new product which will
make EE even more relevant to a new gen-
eration. EE itself is more than 40 years old,
and although it has been revised periodi-
cally, many of the teaching methods em-
ployed were from another generation. The
teaching methods were dated and overly
dependent on the teacher’s personal skills.
Even the concepts of “eternal life” and
“death” which the EE presentation uses are
no longer deemed relevant by sections of
our secular, post-modern society.
During our time together, the group
isolated the core principles of EE e.g. the
on-the-job training that made EE effective.
These were to be our “non-negotiables”
and would be retained in our new product.

Next, we brainstormed, with a zero-based
approach. We even revisited the 5 gospel
points and discussed the relevant scriptures
and illustrations we would use in the new
presentation. (No one could answer why
we never used John 3:16, the most familiar
verse in the Bible, which an unbeliever is
most likely to know if they knew only one
single Bible verse!).
Historically, EE’s thread
of logic has been thus:
Finding out what a person is basing
their hope on, to be “right’ with God, or to
have eternal life. Once that is determined,
and assuming it is some kind of “works”
hope, the EE Gospel presentation tactfully
points out the hopelessness of trying to be
good enough to satisfy God’s requirements,
then moves on to explain God’s real provi-
sion through the substitutionary work of
Christ on the cross.
A new approach:
We have discovered that for many
(though not all, which is why we keep the
standard diagnostic question available) the
idea of trying to obtain righteousness with
God is not a key question that is perceived
as relevant to a secular, post-modern,
thinker. If not that issue, then what is a more
burning question in the mind of many non-
Christians? We have found that many peo-
ple are saying, “I don’t care anything
about eternal life or trying to get there. My
problem is that life doesn’t make any sense
now. Instead of telling me about eternal
life, tell me how my life can make sense of
this mess NOW”.
Whi le EE’s standard
“Diagnostic Questions” are still pre-
sent, we have added another,
very effective dialogue question
which helps students get into the
Gospel more effectively. We first
ask a person, “On a scale of 1 to
10, how would you rate your life
right now?” Then…”what would
make your life a 9 or a 10?” These
are much less aggressive questions
than the EE diagnostic questions.

Indeed, they do not even mention heaven
or eternal life. However, the next question
begins to move into a more spiritual con-
text, which is: “Do you think knowing about
God would move you one way or another
on that scale?”
If the person responds in some way
that knowing about God might help them,
we then proceed to share the concept
that God wants us to experience abundant
life both now and forever. This emphasizes
the “now” element of knowing God, i.e.
that knowing more about God can, in fact,
have a positive impact on a person’s life
today.
We have found that many people
who do not perceive their greatest need is
to know if they have eternal life, do see
their greatest need is to know what can
help their life in the here and now. Of
course, we know that a relationship with
God, through Jesus, will meet these needs.
The Gospel remains the same, but the initial
approach is more fitted to many non-
Christians’ immediate felt needs.
From this point, the Gospel presen-
tation is very similar to what we have used
for years. We proceed to explain the nature
of sin, beginning with, “Life doesn’t work
because we are cut off from the One who
designed life in the first place.” We can fur-
ther explain the nature and consequences
of sin. From this point, once again, we can

and our trainer, Aunty Hui Lee, who would fill
in for me every once in a while when I
stammered. As my cousin is Chinese-educated,
we shared the gospel in bilingual, English and
Mandarin. Power-packed! I was nervous at
first, but as I shared the gospel, there was this
peace within me which God placed, and He
spoke to me, telling me that I’m just to plant
the seed for Him and that He will make it
grow. Whatever the result may be, it is in His
hands, not mine.
As the days passed by, we learned
more and more on how to share the gospel in
a more illustrative manner. Boy, was I glad that
at the end of the clinic, I had caught the

share about God’s provision, not only for life
making sense, but because of Christ’s substi-

through faith.
New teaching methods
We solicited the help of experts in
modern teaching methods and those very
aware of the thinking minds of the present
generation to help us decide how we will
teach the material.
Lastly, we asked the experts in the
field of mass media communication and
advertising to help us to package the prod-
uct so that many more will find EE exciting. I
believe the development costs for this new
product is into millions (USD!).
Whilst surfing the internet and read-
ing the EE blogs, I can sense a genuine new
excitement about EE—and indeed, about
witnessing for our Lord Jesus Christ.
This product has been field-tested
world-wide and the results have been re-
markable. No doubt further improvements
can and will be made in the near future but
EE International feels the product can and
should be brought to the attention of the
user community quickly.

I thank God for the peace He placed
in me throughout the Clinic; for my prayer
partners who would call me or text me to
check on me and to keep me in prayer; for our
trainer who would fill in for us every time we
missed out a point when we stammered; and,
for my partner Carissa for watching my back
as we shared the gospel to our friends. Last but
not least, I thank God that out of the four OJT
sessions we had, we saw three professions and
one was a practice! Praise the Lord!

user’s point of view, if you nearly broke your
backs doing it, IT WAS WORTH IT! I am so
glad and thankful that you gave. May God keep
on blessing you all with backbones so that you
can continue to give and bear much fruit. God
bless you all.
Here’s what I find so good about the Secondly, the Xee Life Now approach is

Thirdly, the Xee Life Now outline is
only half the length of the Adult one, but is as
equally effective. We could run the whole se-
mester in only eight Saturday afternoons, cover-
ing the first four units on Connect Life in four
hours on the first Saturday, and the last four
units on Multiply Life on the last Saturday. The
rest of the units were done in two units each
week for three hours. We would have a time of
singspiration and prayer, followed by the lessons
using the DVD. We would also have role-plays
and discussions as and when directed in the
handbooks.
Fourthly, the Xee teaching method
helps the students learn faster as it involves a lot
of participation from them in the group discus-
sions and numerous role-plays. The students
were able to own the gospel outline in a much
shorter time. As such, they were also able to
share in Chinese dialects - Hokkien, Mandarin
and Cantonese! On top of that, much of the
burden of teaching is taken off the teacher-
trainers since most of it is done through the
DVD, which has excellent teaching. Of all the
semesters, I enjoyed this Xee semester the most.
Since we have had so much fun with
Xee in the last few months, we have decided to
run another semester in early December. The
other good news is, all our three trainees have
enlisted to facilitate in the coming semester. The
positive response may be largely due to the fact
that the role of an Xee facilitator has a lesser
workload than that compared to the conven-
tional EE teacher-trainer.
If you have not tried Xee Life Now,
don’t wait. Just watch the DVD and go through
the Facilitator’s Handbook. You will get the idea,
just like I did, and wished you had tried it sooner.

Concepts in the Xee Life Now are easy to
learn. With the DVDs, we are able to play
back what we are to learn over and over
again, making it easy for us to grasp the
concepts. What I like best are the Launch
Questions which are not offensive to non-
Christians, making it easy for them to open
up to discussion and our sharing of the
gospel.

not God’s destiny for the Israelites. Four souls
a day is not God’s destiny for EE in Malaysia.
Often we are contented with a partial gift from
God when we have yet to receive all that God
has for us.

The Lord describes the Promised Land
as a gift to His people (v.21). But gifts must be
taken. In the case of eternal life, we must repent
of our sins, ask God for forgiveness and surren-
der our life to Jesus. To possess our Promised
Land, we must exercise faith and GO up and
TAKE it. The call is ―GO up and TAKE pos-
session (emphasis mine).‖ Now EE Malaysia must
not be contented. Now is the time to GO and
TAKE … to move into, to POSSESS what
God has already given. This gift of God needs
to be TAKEN. What is given needs to be
TAKEN in order to be possessed. Our God-
given destiny is not our possession yet. Let us
not be satisfied and contented with our pro-
gress and then miss out on our Promised Land.
Let us GO and TAKE.
How We Can Miss Out On Our Destiny
(1:21-25)
Deut 1:21-25 NIV
21 See, the LORD your God has given you the land.
Go up and take possession of it as the LORD, the God
of your fathers, told you. Do not be afraid; do not be
discouraged." 22 Then all of you came to me and said,
"Let us send men ahead to spy out the land for us and
bring back a report about the route we are to take and
the towns we will come to." 23 The idea seemed good to
me; so I selected twelve of you, one man from each tribe.
24 They left and went up into the hill country, and came

to the Valley of Eshcol and explored it. 25 Taking
with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it
down to us and reported, "It is a good land that the
LORD our God is giving us."
After commanding them to go and take
their possession, the Lord gives this word, ―Do
not be afraid; do not be discouraged.‖ The Isra-
elites were fearful and discouraged. Fear can
paralyse the strongest and most able. Discour-
agement makes us lose heart and creates in us
the unwillingness to battle opposition and go
pass obstructions.
I believe this is the same situation with
the EE ministry. Malaysian believers are often
fearful and discouraged when it comes to shar-
ing their faith. We have with us the most pow-
erful tool to change the world for the better.
The Apostle Paul refers to the gospel with the
same Greek word (“dunamis” translated as
―power‖ in the NIV) from which we derive the
word ―dynamite‖ in Romans 1:16-17 and yet
our attempts to proclaim the gospel is at best,
feeble. Paul adds, “For in it, the righteousness of
God is revealed (NKJV).” When it comes to shar-
ing our faith, we have the fear of people, fear of
repercussions, fear of ridicule, fear of rejection,
fear of not knowing what to say, to name a few.
Yes, fear will cause us to miss out on our des-
tiny. We need to overcome this fear if we are to
GO and TAKE. The Lord says to us today,
―Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
To assuage their fear, the Israelites sent
“men ahead to spy out the land for us and bring back a
report about the route we are to take and the towns we
will come to” (v.22). In essence, they did an
evaluation and assessment of the ground condi-
tions. This is good for planning but it is no
good if we have fear and are discouraged. It
only makes matters worse. The more we see,
the more frightened we become. Often when
we don’t want to do something, we merely
postpone it by commissioning more research.
This mistake caused the Israelites another 40
years and one generation of people. (Except for
Joshua and Caleb, none over the age of 40
made it into the Promised Land. Only their chil-
dren did.) Today we do not need more research.
We already have done plenty. We need to be
courageous and to OBEY our Lord’s Great
Commission. We need to equip people to share
and then ask them to do it. Just do it!
Fear often paralyses us despite the
strength of our reasoning capabilities. The spies

returned from their mission and reported, “It is
a good land that the LORD our God is giving
us" (v.25). And yet despite all they can see of
God’s goodness, their generation missed out on
their God-given destiny. We need to heed the
voice of God more than the voice of our rea-
son.
The Israelites have other problems and
excuses as well. Despite all that is said and
done, they ―were unwilling to go” (v.26); they re-
belled (v.26); they lied (―The LORD hates us.”
Compare v.25, “It is a good land that the LORD
our God is giving us”) to cover up their cowardice;
they were fearful of obstacles and opposition,
“so he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the
hands of the Amorites to destroy us” (v.27), “the people
are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large
with walls up to the sky‖ (v.28) and they blamed
others on their team, “Our brothers have made us
lose heart (v.28).”
Let Us Go Up
And Take Possession Of It (v.21)
The key to overcome fear is to
strengthen our faith in God. To do this, Moses
reminded the Israelites to remember what the
LORD had done for them in the past.
Deut 1:29-31 NIV
"Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. 30 The
LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for
you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes,
31 and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD
your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the
way you went until you reached this place."
“Do not be terrified; do not be afraid.”
Why? Because the Lord will go before you, be-
cause the Lord will fight for you JUST as He
did for you in Egypt. Like the Israelites, we
need to remind ourselves of what the Lord has
done for us in the past, how He started the
ministry 20 years ago when some Malaysians
paid their own way to Manila, Hong Kong, Sin-
gapore and even the United States to learn EE
and returned to equip others in their churches
and beyond. Today, many Malaysians regularly
teach EE in other nations in the region and be-
yond. (This year alone, Malaysian EE teachers
taught adult and kids clinics in mainland China
(several times), Cambodia, Egypt, Jordan, India,
Vietnam, Mongolia, etc. and we don’t even
count the results of these clinics when we say

four persons are saved everyday in Malaysia as a
result of the EE ministry!) As we reflect, there
is awe and wonder as we continue to realize that
from the Chairman’s desk...
“the Lord will fight for us” (v.30).
Moses continued, “there you saw how the
LORD your God carried you,” (v.31). We need to
remember what we saw, what we witnessed,
what the Lord had done to ―carry‖ us. The
Lord carried us, as a father carries his son. No
human hand brought us to where we are today.
It is the Lord who carried us all these 20 years.
I can see … the pastors and lay leaders we
trained, those who faithfully implemented EE
in their churches, those who continued and per-
sisted despite opposition from without and
from within, the believers who were trained,
those who were transformed, became more
confident, not just in sharing their faith, but in
every sphere of new ministries that they would
take up, those saved, and those saved who in
turn were trained to share their faith, and those
who trained yet more others for the work of the
ministry. Let us all see …
Finally, Moses reminded the Israelites,
“the LORD your God, who went ahead of
you…” (v.33). As we look into the future, we
become confident only because we know it is
the Lord who called us and it is the Lord who
went ahead of us. Whatever the future brings,
one thing is for sure, the Lord is already there.
He went ahead of us. In this is our confidence.
Moses told the people that the Lord went ahead
of them in order to “search out places for you to
camp and to show you the way you should go” (v.33).
That means the Lord will provide for us, will
guard and guide us – what more can we ask for?
Let’s move forward with faith in our hearts, not
fear. And let’s move forward to our God-given
destiny. May we one day report that 40 persons
not 4, are saved everyday because we are equip-
ping and encouraging believers to share their
faith. “Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.”

Christmas and a Joyful New Year. May 2009 be
the year where our God-given destiny will be
fulfilled in each one of us, in our church and in
