EDU 5170 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY: Lesson Plan Integrating Education and Technology SueAnn Seccafico Date: November 28th

2012

Standards: Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. 1. Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.

Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. 4. Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

a. Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width? Technology Standards: 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers: a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

b. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS S. Teachers: a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. Lesson Objective(s): 1. Students will be able to understand how to solve multi-step linear equations of the form ax b = c with a 0. 2. The students will be able to solve an equation that requires combining like terms.

Introduce the Learning Activity: The teacher will start the lesson by asking questions about solving multi-step equations. The teacher will ask: - What are we trying to solve for?(We are trying to solve for x)

- What is the definition of a variable? (Variable is a letter that represents an unknown number) - What is the first step when solving equations.(We need to get x by itself), The teacher will then do a number of problems on the board: x + 5 = 15 2x - 4 = 12 2(x + 2) + 3x = 22 5x - 4 = 12 + 3x The teacher will ask the students to help solve the equations explaining what steps the took. When the teacher feels that the students are understanding the material, the teacher will explain the directions for the computer activity. The activity will be a math game that involves solving algebraic equations. Students will be able to use their calculators if needed.

Provide Information: Communication is an information aspect to this lesson. This information may be new to some students and it is up to the teacher to ensure that they are communicating in a way that students will understand. The teacher will provide the students with detailed explanations of how to solve linear equations. Before allowing the students to work with the computer program, the teacher must first ensure that the students get the proper directions and understand what the assignment is asking for. Students will be allowed to use there calculators, if students do not have a calculator, the teacher will provide the students with an online calculator. While the students are working on their computer activity, the teacher must ensure that the students are working hard on the assignment. The teacher will be walking around the room and answering any questions the students might have. http://www.quia.com/rr/168572.html http://www.online-calculator.com/

Provide Practice:

The teacher will show the students several examples on solving multi-step equations on the white board. Next the students will be assigned a computer assignment, that will be worked on individually. Using the computer games the students will solve linear equations. The computer game is similar to how to be a millionaire. If the students get the answer right, the will move up to the next dollar amount. Each student will be allowed 3 hints. If the student gets the answer wrong they will start have to start over. The first one to a million will get a prize. Provide Knowledge of Results: A. While the students are working individually on their assignment the teacher will be walking around the classroom checking to see if the students are completing the assignment correctly. a. For those students who understand the material, the teacher will check over their work and inform them that they are going a good job. b. For those students who are having difficulty, the teacher will sit with the student and go over the Theorem to help them get a better understanding of the material.

Review the Activity: Before the students work on their computer activity, the teacher will questions a series of questions; - What are we trying to solve for?(We are trying to solve for x) - What is the definition of a variable? (Variable is a letter that represents an unknown number) - What is the first step when solving equations.(We need to get x by itself) The teacher will then go on to explain that whatever you do to one side of the equation with must do to the other.

Method of Assessment: Before the class is dismissed, the teacher have the students complete and exit slip. The teacher will put two equations on the board. The students will have time to solve the equation independently. The teacher will collect the exit slip when they are finished. 1.A: The student fully understand the material and provided all necessary work. 2. B: The student had a good understanding of the material but had some errors in the work provided. 3. C: The students had some understanding of the material. There was incorrect answers and the work provide had frequent errors. 4. F: The assignment was not completed or the student show no understanding. The answers were incorrect and no work was provided.
