GENTAMICIN SULFATE OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION, USP is a sterile, topical anti-infective agent for ophthalmic use.

The active ingredient, gentamicin sulfate, is a water-soluble antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group. Gentamicin sulfate is active in vitro against many strains of the following microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae,Enterobacter aerogenes Escherichia coli; Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Neisseriagonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens. To preserve, it is added with a preservative, Benzalkonium Chloride 0.01%. It is sterilized by autoclaving. During this process, the contents (liquid or solid) become exposed to saturated steam at the required temperature for the appropriate length of time. Gentamicin in ophthalmic solutions prepared by mixing ophthalmic and injectable products and stored in plastic bottles at 4-8 degrees C were stable for three months. Plastic bottles are prepared aseptically.
