I think that it is absolutely necessary to write shitty first drafts. I think that a first draft should be as broad and general as it can be. That is the point. We are supposed to write shitty first drafts so that we can narrow the focus of the piece in draft number two and even more so in draft number three. Writing is a process and the magic doesn't always come out on the first try.
