Assignment: Reading and Analyzing a Critical Essay

First after reading through the article Ongitan and the Possibility of Oral Seeing in Beowulf by Robin Waugh multiple times (first to get the general idea of the article and then again to analyze the material), you are to write a 3-4 page paper. The first part of this paper is a one to two paragraph summary about the material you read. The summary should include any relevant main points, ideas, or theories that you can incorporate into your analysis of the text. The second part of the paper is an analysis on your opinion of the article.

To show your skills of building an opinion about a critical essayWhat do you feel is the authors purpose of writing this essay? Do you agree with the authors claims? Do you think the article is of importance to you? Other students? Would you recommend the essay to others? How does the essay relate to Beowulf?

After writing the short summary, the main portion of this paper should be written from your point of view. I want to see your thought-process here and also how well you evaluated and how much you understood the material. This paper should be focused on your thoughts, so it is important to focus not only on the authors claims but how you, as the reader, feel by either agreeing or disagreeing with the claims made by the author. It is okay to disagree with the author. Your opinion is what I am looking for mainly within this paper. With your paper, you are to turn in a marked-up copy of the essay, with your notes and questions written in the margins and along the text. The purpose of this assignment is to engage with the text, so I can see that you have both read and understood the material.
