Openness to experience inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious


Open people are motivated to seek new experiences

and to engage in self-examination. Closed people by contrast are more comfortable with familiar and traditional experiences.

Conscientiousness efficient/organized vs. easy-going/careless


A tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and

aim for achievement; planned rather than spontaneous behavior; organized, and dependable. Conscientiousness is importantly related to successful academic performance in students.

Extraversion outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved


Extraverts tend to enjoy human interactions and

to be enthusiastic, talkative, assertive, and gregarious. They take pleasure in activities that involve large social gatherings, such as parties, community activities, public demonstrations, and business or political groups. Introverts tend to be more reserved and less outspoken in groups. They often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, using computers, hiking and fishing.

Agreeableness friendly/compassionate vs. cold/unkind


People who score high on this dimension tend to

believe that most people are honest, decent, and trustworthy. People scoring low on agreeableness are generally less concerned with others' well-being and report having less empathy. Low agreeableness is often characterized by skepticism about other people's motives resulting in suspicion and unfriendliness.

Neuroticism sensitive/nervous vs. secure/confident


Individuals who score high on neuroticism are more

likely than the average to experience such feelings as anxiety, anger, envy, guilt, and depressed mood. Neuroticism is a risk factor for the internalizing" mental disorders such as phobia, depression, panic disorder, and other anxiety disorders. Individuals who score low in neuroticism are more emotionally stable and less reactive to stress.
