Alex McGregor September 25, 2012 Period 6/7 Weekly Writing 2

So there I was in Costa Rica. Was I having any fun? Absolutely not! Some 13th birthday I was having. I was just sitting in my room, minding my own business, when I heard a knock on the door, followed by my name. Charlotte. My mother says through the door. What? I snap back at her. Im still upset about my parents making me come to Costa Rica. Listen, I know youve been taciturn with us ever since we made you come to Costa Rica with us, but can you try to listen? But I dont want to! I whine. I dont like your attitude, missy! Could you at least try to be jovial for the rest of the family? Oh all right, Ill try. Thats a good girl. Now, if you want, pie is fresh out of the oven! I smile; my mom always knows how to cheer me up. YAY!!!! PIE!!!! I shout. I knew that I was being kind of dogmatic about how much I didnt like Costa Rica, it is a beautiful place and all, but I really missed my friends. I just wished they could be there with me; they would make the trip fun. But I knew I was being absurd. My friends couldnt be there because they were busy. Lauren always has some kind of art class, and Teddy is always playing sports with his friends, basketball, most likely. What I didnt know was that my mom had a really, really stupefying surprise waiting

Alex McGregor September 25, 2012 Period 6/7 Weekly Writing 2 for me downstairs. I was at the bottom, turning the corner and LAUREN!!!! TEDDY!!!! Youre here!!! I cant believe it, youre really here!!! They give me weary smiles, like they were too tired to even wish me a happy birthday. Whats wrong? I ask sounding concerned. Were fine, Lauren replied, Just jet-lagged. Oh, okay then! Want to come explore with me? Nah, were too tired. Maybe tomorrow, ok? Oh sure, I reply without much enthusiasm. And on that note, we all decided to go to bed so we could get up early. Of course, the next morning I was up way before everyone else. My mom always says that I am the early bird. I decided to explore on my own. Maybe not my best idea, but I went with it anyway. Thank heavens I didnt forget to leave a note, or I would have been in a bucket load trouble. With that I left, planning to be back really soon. And now, here I am, stuck in this hole, before dawn, and no one even knows Im gone. This is just great! I think to myself. I knew I never should have left, but did I listen to my instincts? Not in the slightest. I see the bright sun through the top of the hole; everyone will be up by now. I think about how far I went. I cant have gone too far away from the house, right? I was right! I hear a door slam, and my name being called. Twice. Teddy! Lauren! Over here! I yell at the top of my lungs. They start walking over to the hole. Oops! I think. No! On second thought, guys, do

Alex McGregor September 25, 2012 Period 6/7 Weekly Writing 2 NOT come over here! They start to run towards my voice, and fall head over heels into the hole. Guys! Now we are all stuck! I groan. No! Were not! Lauren says; always the positive one. Teddy and I just stare at her. Here, boost me up! she says, but we just stare harder. Sometimes you can be so thick! I can get out if you just give me a boost. Then Ill go tell our parents we want to do a little exploring before breakfast. While Im at it, Ill get a rope and flashlight so that we can get out of here. But Im hungry! I complain. Now its my turn to get the stare. Charlotte! they say in chorus. They look at me like I just grew 6 arms. What! Lauren, arent you going to go tell the parents? I grumble. Yes, I am, and dont go complaining, its your fault were in this fine kettle of fish anyway! You can trust Lauren to say something like that. I stifle a laugh, and Teddy and I steal a glance at each other. Just go! I said, giggling as Teddy and I shoved her out the top. She sprints towards the house. I hear my mom answer the door. Lauren tells her that we dont really want breakfast (at that I groan and fold my arms), were going exploring, and that well be back for lunch. With that my mom sends her on her way. So now here she is, back in the hole. We feel around the walls, and Lauren exclaims, Look! The section she is rubbing crumbles in her hands. The last thing I see is a colossal rock. And then everything goes black. Charlotte! I awaken to see the concerned faces of my two friends.

Lunch! I say sitting up strait. Yup, shes back to normal. Teddy laughs.

Lauren giggles and I spot a hole, one that wasnt there before. Guys! I gasp. Look at that! It must have been uncovered when Lauren rubbed the rock! We all gape at the hole. Lauren pulls out a flashlight. Ill go first, she says, I have the flashlight! She grins. And then she enters, and we follow. The first thing I think when we enter the cave is WOW. This is amazing! I hold my breath and take in my surroundings. When I look behind me I see that Lauren and Teddy are doing the same. OH MY GOSH! exclaims Teddy. You took the words right out of my mouth! replies Lauren excitedly. I just stand there gaping. Whats wrong? Cat got your tongue? Teddy snickers, and Lauren giggles. The-the paintings, I manage to stutter, Theyre amazing! Yeah! What do you think they are? Cave paintings! You mean like, graffiti? No cave paintings! By the Homo Sapiens-Sapiens! No way! Yes way! We all stare at the stupendous cave paintings. And run back to the entrance. We have to go

Tell the parents Wow!

Alex McGregor September 25, 2012 Period 6/7 Weekly Writing 2

Yeah, wow, I say quietly. The cave paintings were truly stunning, with all the patterns and animals. There were a few colors, including black, red, brown. There were paintings of bison, deer, and animals of all kind. Some paintings were of patterns, and some were smeared down the side, almost as if water had run over them, long before. And then we leave. My mom gasps when she hears the news. Oh my! She exclaims. This is wonderful news! Are you sure it is what you think it is? Yes, absolutely! Lauren replies. We all nod. Were sure. But of course she had to see them for herself. We walk back to the hole, and she hops in after us. As she looked around she exclaimed, Were these paintings always smudged? She asked pointing at the painting smudged around the room. They were always smudged. We reply. They must have been smudged by water. We nod, Thats exactly what we were thinking! Other than the couple smudged paintings, she thought the rest were amazing! Exquisite! Did you know that our earliest ancestors likely painted these? She asks, tearing her eyes away from the painting for a second to look at us. Grandma did? Was my reply.

Alex McGregor September 25, 2012 Period 6/7 Weekly Writing 2 This time it was Teddy who spoke up, No, the Homo Sapiens-Sapiens painted them. Remember, we learned in History that it was the Homo SapiensSapiens who started cave painting? By this time I could no longer ignore my growling stomach. Can we go eat now? I ask. They all just nod. With that we went back inside. Later, all my friends from Costa Rica wanted to see the cave. We even got tourists from all over the world. And that was just the start of our fame. It turns out that that was just one of the many caves we found together. We looked for some in Asia, some in France, some in Germany, and all over the world. And even though after we were done with the cave findings, we still remained friends. Lauren and Teddy ended up marrying, and they had two kids. They lived in London, UK, in an old flat, right near Buckingham Palace. I however decide to settle down in Chicago, with my husband and three kids. And I think I can say that we all lived happily ever after!
