Types of Microorganisms

Classification
5 kingdoms system
Animalia Plantae Fungi Protista Monera

Animalia, plantae, fungi and protista are eukaryotes Monera is prokaryotes Archae & Bacteria

Fungi
Fungi are unicellular or multicellular Unicellular forms of fungi are yeasts Multicellular are mushrooms and the most typical fungi are molds Fungi can reproduce sexually and asexually

They obtain nutrients by absorbing organic material from the environment

Protozoa
The protozoa are unicellular eukaryotes

They move by pseudopods, flagella or cilia

Protozoa obtain nutrients by absorption or ingestion through specialized structures

Algae
Algae are unicellular or multicellular eukaryotes Obtain nutrients by photosynthesis Algae produce oxygen and carbohydrates that are used by other organisms

Bacteria
Unicellular microorganisms Has wide range of shapes:
Spheres Rods Spirals

Can be found in:

Single cell Pairs Chains Clusters

Virus
A submicroscopic infectious agent

Can only multiply inside living cells

Unable to grow or reproduce outside a host cell Infect all cellular life Known as virions when outside the host as inert particles

Growth factors affecting Microorganisms

Moist condition favour growth Survive in a wide range of temperature:
Form spores during dry and high temperature Vegetative reproduction when condition favor growth

Cannot grow at low pH
