Advanced Homework Sheet ( Blue Group) Teacher: Jessica Owens Course: Algebra I Name: Date: In class, we learned to perform

reasonable estimates of different types of quantities. We estimated for example, that our hair grows with a speed of approximately 0.00000001 mph (or about a centimetre a month). When making estimates, we always want to make sure we do three things:

Choose appropriate units. Identify what we know about the problem and write this down. Write down how you got your answer. Write down all your steps. This makes it easier for others to check how reliable your estimate is.

Before the next lesson, I want you to answer the following questions using estimation. I will collect your answers at the beginning of class. You will not be graded on the exactness of your answers, but on how well you follow the three steps outlined above. 1. How tall is your house? 2. How much money do you think you will earn during your entire life? 3. How many square blocks are there in Pacific Pines? 4. How many hours do all the people in Queensland together work a year? 5. How many drops of water will fit in a one litre size bottle?
