The film I am going to be writing about is Alien, a sci-fi, thriller, horror film.

The title 'Alien' is a very simple It is a very successful title. It suggests something that is foreign and strange, signifying the unknown. This connotes fear. Aliens are also genre conventions of sci-fi. If you think of horror films, you usually think of titles with the words 'devil', 'blood' or even 'kill' as they represent genre convention and implements used within horror films. This could be a good targeting technique as people might be intrigued about the film as aliens are portrayed in so many different ways and styles for example; in some films they are portrayed as people, mythical or supernatural creatures. In this case however the title is definitive. It refers to one creature or species. One ultimate creature which is to be respected and feared. The director of this film is called Ridley Scott. He is also known for Bladerunner, 'Gladiator', 'Black Hawk Down' and 'American Gangster'. All these are action, adventure films and one has a sci-fi aspect. Alien is a remarkable film because it came before all the other films he is well known for and this could have been the catalyst for his successful career. Everyone who is interested in films knows the film 'Alien' but not everyone has seen it. It's strap line is 'in space no one can hear you scream'. To me this is representing the seclusion and the dangers of the unknown. It is iconic in the way that 2001 a space odyssey was iconic. He has managed to take the sterile environment of a space station and create a horror film only copied but never bettered by films like Event Horizon. I don't believe he has done any horror films apart from alien. His achievement with this film is outstanding. This film got an 8.5/10 rating from IMDB ( internet movie database). This outstanding achievement for a horror film is very good, considering this was his only horror film in his show reel. The year this film was brought out in was 1979. This time was at the forefront of the horror film era. The total gross profit this film made was 80,931,801 and at this time in my opinion was outstanding. This film was proven to be popular as the opening weekend the films profit was 3,527,881. The film could have used word to mouth marketing technique as the films profit grew more than 20x and this technique of marketing can either make or break a film. This film had two Production Companys, one very unknown and the other very known. The very unknown company was called 'Brandywine Productions' and has only produced 9 films. The only two films produced before 'Alien' are drama, comedy films. This shows that the company had no real experience in this genre. These two films got a very good rating of 7/10 and 7.3/10. These rating were also from IMDB ( internet movie database). This company then went on to produce the rest of the 'Aliens' franchise and even the 'Aliens vs predator' films.

The second production company is called '20th Century-Fox Productions' and this production company is very well known, but not for horror films. Their only famous horror film is called 'The Omen' and this film also got a good rating of 7.6/10 from IMDB. Well thinking of aspects which I could include in my own production, I find it hard to choose as this film was made using a large budget of 11,000,000 and the fact that it was portrayed to be filmed in space on an unknown planet. There are some elements I could use, for example: Small claustrophobic spaces, dark corridors and lots of lengthy times of silence. These would all add there own excellent effect to my production. If I was to use small, claustrophobic spaces I would make these spaces in which there is only one way in and one way out. This would build tension as if I am going to have an protagonist they might meet here.
