2 Characteristics of a Zener diode and its use as a Voltage Regulator Aim: To determine the characteristics of the given Zener diode and to verify its use as a voltage regulator.

Apparatus Required

Formulae: 1. 2. 3. Iz = P z / V z Vs = V - V z Is = IL + Iz

Where Iz = Zener current in Amperes. Pz = Power rating of the Zener diode in Watts. Vz = Voltage across the Zener diode in volts. Vs = Voltage across Rs in volts. Is = Current through Rs in Amperes. IL = Load current in Amperes.

Procedure: V - I Characteristics: 1. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram. 2. The supply voltage is increased gradually and readings for the voltage drop across the Zener diode and the diode current are noted from voltmeter and ammeter. Voltage Regulation: 1. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram. 2. The supply voltage is kept constant at 20V. 3. The Load current is varied by varying the load resistance and corresponding values of the load voltage is noted.
