The Canon Speedlite58QfXis an EOS-dedicated, high-output flash unit
automatically compatible with E-TTL I I , E-TTL, and TTL
autoflash. I t
canbe
used in threedifferent wags : As a normal on-camera flash, the master unit
for a wireless,
multi-Speedliteflash system, or a slave
unit.

When the 58DEX
is attached
to
an
EMScamera;
almost
all automatic
exposure control for flash photography is handled by the camera.
I t is almost the same as using thecamera's built-in flash if it has one.
You can think of the580EXas a built-in, high-output flash.
I t is automatically compatible with thecamera's flash metering mode
{E-TTL I I , E-TTL,
and
TTL}.
The
camera controls theSpeedliteautomatically in thefollowing flash metering
modes:
1 . E-TTL I I autoflash (evaluative flash metering with preflash reading/lens
distance information)
2. E-TTL autoflash (evaluative flash metering with preflash reading)
3. TTL
autoflash (off-the-film metering for real-timeflash metering)
Regarding the
camera's
available
flash
metering
modes,
refer to the
camera's instruction manual. The Speedlite's major specifications are
listed in "External Flash I tems: "
Thecamera instruction manual's chapter on flash photography
will
refer to
cameras having 1 and 2 as aType-A camera (compatible with E-TTLor
E-TTLI I ) .
And cameras having 3(compatiblewith
only
TTL) are
called
Type-1 1 3 cameras.

a To detach the Speedlite, loosen [he locking

slip the Speedlite out of the hot shoe.
Wireless Selector Settings
The wireless selector is for switching between

quick flash], then red (fully recycled or flash
ready) .

About Quick Flash
Quickflash enables aflash to be fired before flash- ready, when the pilot lamp
is still green-
Although
the
Guide Na. will be 116 to 112 that of the full output, quickflash is
effective for near
subjects and when you want ashorter recycle time .
Set the drive made to Single . Quickflash cannot be used in the continuous
shoaling . FEB, manual flash, and stroboscopic flash modes.
About Auto Power Off
To sage battery
power,
the power will turn off automatically after 90 sec. of
idle use. To
turn on the Speedlite again, pressthe shutter button halfway.
Or pressthe Speedlite's test firing
button .

is active .

Bracketing)

FED(Flash Exposure Bracketing).

Bounce Flash
By painting theflash
head toward awall or ceiling, the flash will trounce off
the surface
before illuminating thesubject. This can soften
shadows behind
the
subject for a more natural-looking
shot .
This
is called bounceflash.
Set
the Bounce Direction
Hold down the
<PllS}i> button and turn theflash head.

flash coverage is set automatically, the
flash coverage will be set to
50mm .

Creating a Catchlight
With the catchlight panel, you cancreate a
catchlighF in the subject's eyes to
add
lif e to the f acial expression.
Point the f lash head upward by 90.
Pull out the wide panel.

EMS digital camerashave one of three image sizes. The lens' effective focal
length w ill differ depending on the camera's
image size . The 5peedlite
automatically recognizesthe EMS digital camera's image size and

stroboscopic flash, a rapid series of flashes is fired

be used to
capture multiple images of a moping
subject in asingle photograph for later
study.
You can set the firing frequency {number of
flashes per sec. expressed as

Calculating the
Shutter Speed
During
stroboscopic flash, the shutter should remain open until the firing
stops. Use the formula
below
to
calculate the shutter speed and set it w ith
the camera.

Color Temperature Information Transmission
When the flashfires, thecolor temperature information is transmitted to
certain specific EOSdig ital camera. This feature
optimizestheflashpicture's
white
balance.
When thecamera's color balanceis set to aM>or <y>, it
wilt work automatically.
