What is It

Contemporary Art
Contemporary Art is the art created from the imagination and emotion of the
artists of the new generation. It uses a wide variety of materials, techniques, and
styles. It is characterized by being conceptual, innovative, expressive, and
experimental in nature. It also provides opportunities to reflect on the society and
the issues happening nowadays. Moreover, the current and recent practice of art
started from the 1970’s up to the present

4
Xyza Cruz Bacani’s picture of a man on the stairs https://bit.ly/3eZ7MWg is
an art produced by an artist living today. The photo was shot in Hongkong in which
Xyza used photography as medium to express her feelings about what is happening
to migrant workers and to become aware of the human rights issues in the society.

Characteristics of Contemporary Art.

1. Collaborative- a process wherein the artist is associated with a mix of
performance, installation, architecture, and culinary arts. It is interactive and
participative such the art is never complete without the audience’s active input.
2. Integrative- it is where the artist combines various mediums and art forms
such as music, dance, and theater to create a single work.
3. Process-oriented- it is site-specific, meaning the artists cannot be
experienced in the same way if removed from their original places of exhibit whether
in the gallery, out in the streets, in the forest, on the internet, etc.

Although, many of the artists maybe collaborative, integrative, and process-

oriented, there are also works that are done alone by the artists. They tend to create
without collaborating with others specially if the art is too fragile in handling.

What is It

The development of Philippine Art comes in three major traditions.

(Sayseng 2016, 3-6)

1. Ethnic Traditions = the art forms are primarily influenced by the

geographical location and experiences of the Filipinos. For instance, dance
varies depending on area where ancestors
thrived. In visual art, pottery weaving, wood
carving, and metal carving were dominant
during the pre-colonial period making use
of available materials surrounding them.
While in Architecture, they used local
materials such as anahaw, bamboo, rattan,
and other materials in constructing
structures.
https://bit.ly/2D4mAoh

7
2. Spanish Colonial Traditions = the
Spaniards tend to replace the Philippine
indigenous arts with western art forms.
Religions and secularization greatly
influenced the art in the Philippines. For
example in Literature, literary works were
classified into religious and secular prose
and poetry. In theater arts, secular and
religious plays like “komedya” became
popular. Meanwhile, in dance, religious
dances were commonly performed to
venerate patrons and saints. In Music,
bands and orchestra multiplied as the
zarsuelas and operas. In Visual arts,
Spaniards introduced painting and
sculpture. In Architecture, stones and
bricks were used in constructing
buildings.

3. American Colonial and Contemporary Traditions- the American brought

many changes in the politics, economy, education, and culture of the
Philippines. In the field of education there are Filipinos who went abroad to
study and came back to the country carrying the concept of modern art and
continue to progress to contemporary art tradition. During this time different
art forms were written and performed in English. Also, artists who could do
illustrations in textbook or graphic design for product labels emerged.

What is It

The Philippine Contemporary Art is divided into seven major art forms:
1. Music- is vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way
as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. The music mostly
evolved into a combination of classical, traditional, and
ethnic music. Furthermore, our country is rich in
indigenous culture through the existence of ethnic
musical instruments such as pipes, flutes, gong,
kulintang and various string instruments like the kudyapi
kudyapi. Kundiman and the balitao were the songs being
performed by the Filipinos.
2.Theatre or theater is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live
performers, typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or
imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage.
Many of the rituals made by our ancestors are considered the earliest forms
of theater which until now is still alive in the various regions. The Canao or kanyaw
of the Cordillera region and the Kashawing of Lake Lanao in Minadanao are those of
the rituals that are still being practiced nowadays.
3. Dance- A performance art that involves rhythmic
body movement within a given space and choreographed
based on musical beat. It is performed either in front of an
audience or by everyone on a dance floor. In the region, some
of dances, with the accompaniment of the ethnic musical
instrument often imitated the movements of animals,
humans, and elements from nature. Pangalay, Man-manok,
Pangalay
Talip, Inamong, and Tinikling are dances that imitate the
movement of animals.
4. Literature is defined as books and other written
works, especially those considered to have creative or artistic
merit or lasting value.
The Mangyans of Mindoro were the one of the Filipinos who used bamboo
poles and etched with baybayin script used to compose short poems. Moreover,
printed literature came in the form of catechism during the Spanish era.
5. Visual arts are forms of art that focus on creating
pieces of work that mainly make use of the visual
environment while trying to convey messages of emotion,
ideas or information. Filipinos have been making images
before the colonization. In sculpture, bulul, hagabi and the
santos or sculpture of saints, okir, sarimanok were among the
artworks commonly known in the region. Furthermore,
tattooing, a bodily inscriptions serves as jewelry in Visayas
and in the Highlands.

11
6. Film and Broadcast Art are the most popular of the art forms. Similar to
the theater, except that is not a live performance and the action is seen on a flat
screen. Although, it appeared only in the early 1900s in Manila and later spread in
the regions, it has gained public acceptance.
7. Architecture is the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings.
How Philippine Muslims organize space in architecture is also telling of their
adherence to the Tawhid and other Islamic beliefs. Mosque is one of the Islamic
building that characterized architecture.
