TO TEACH OR NOT TO TEACH PRONUNCIATION (By Shirley Torres)

"...the teaching of pronunciation is so crucial to our students", (Goodwin, 2001:117)

Even though, students have many reasons for learning a foreign language, it is undoubtedly that one of the most important is to communicate in the target language; in simple words, understand and be understood. Consequently teaching pronunciation plays an important role in second language learning.

It is important to keep in mind that pronunciation habits are formed early; therefore it can and must be taught at every level of ESL instruction; However, when I talk about teaching pronunciation it doesnt mean the sound system, I refer to give learners a lot of exposure to the different elements of the target language pronunciation: sounds, intonation, stress, rhythm etc., through different sources like TV programs, movies, music, audios with conversation between native speakers , etc., because they are going to imitate, internalize and produce the sounds according to the input they receive, so it has to be accurately otherwise the result will be fossilized pronunciation. Then, in advanced levels and in order to improve their pronunciation it is essential to introduce them to the use of the sound system.

Another important factor which is important to consider is that there are some similarities between English and Spanish, but also some differences that may interfere with the correct pronunciation of the target language (phonemic differences) and with decoding or spelling (phonological differences). And it is necessary that the teacher be aware of these ones in order to provide students with this information and with a lot of activities that may help them to overcome these problems.

To conclude, the goal of pronunciation is not to make our students sound like native speakers of English, because the quality of their pronunciation will not detract significantly from their ability to communicate, but it is important to make them aware the importance of correct pronunciation and intonation in order to get an effective communication.
