Lesson Plan

Name: Kate Kinsella and Kaitlyn Henaghan Class/Subject: Short Story Prediction Date: 11/02/11 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will engage with text by making inferences of what will happen next. We will read the story aloud, stopping at certain points in order for students to fill out their prediction chart. After weve finished reading, we will pair students with a partner so that they may compare predictions versus the actual outcome. Next, students will create a Part II of The Crippled Boy so as to continue the practice of prediction making. Content Standards: For students to make educated predictions, read aloud, and work well with partners Materials/Resources/Technology: Prediction Worksheet, A Crippled Boy, Wordle Word Cloud(http://www.wordle.net/)A wordle is a device for generating word clouds from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. This is a beneficial tool for predicting what will happen in a story prior to reading it. Teachers Goals: To encourage students to engage with the text by using their own creativity while simultaneously further developing critical thinking skills. Time Start of Class: 3 minutes Hand out and explain prediction worksheet Give students time to examine the wordle Introduction of Lesson: 2 minutes Before reading the story, we will ask students to identify the main characters and the theme of the story in the first prediction box based on the wordle. Lesson Instruction: 10 minutes (which will include 1 min per prediction box) Well ask for student volunteers to read aloud. We will stop them before certain events are about to happen in the story so that they can make their prediction, then we will call on a new volunteer to read. This will improve students ability to read aloud.

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: 5 minutes We will pair students together so they may compare their predictions to the summary. While they complete the right side of the worksheet, we will walk around the classroom to see what kinds of predictions students made and to see if they have questions. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: After students are finished with the worksheet, we will come together as a class and call on volunteers (with their hands raised) to summarize the story for us. Then on their own, they will make a prediction about what happens if the story were to be continued
