Personal Identity Poem

Here is your chance to show who you really are and who you are not. What? With Diane Burns poem Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question as your guide, write a poem about how people have stereotyped you. How? Part One: 1. List five cultural groups to which you belong on the attached chart. Think gender, age, religion, ethnic group, etc. 2. Brainstorm as many stereotypes as you can for those groups. 3. For one of your groups, list five or more stereotypes. Part Two: 1. Choose the group with the strongest list of stereotypes. Or pick your most unique cultural group. 2. Create a conversation with an imaginary person who would bring up the stereotypes on your list. Imagine an exact scene in your mind. 3. Write the entire conversation with one column for the stranger and one column for you. 4. Your answer column will be your poem. You may need to add more detail to your answers so the reader can imagine the whole conversation. 5. Make sure the reader knows what cultural group you are targeting. Include at least five stereotypes in your poem. 6. The speakers tone (your voice) should indicate how you feel about the stereotypes. 7. Your poem should be about as long as Diane Burns poem.
