Knight, C. (2006). Groups for Individuals with Traumatic Histories: Practice Considerations for Social Workers. Social Work, 51(1), 20-30. Group membership is beneficial and effective for individuals that have experienced trauma. Studies have shown that membership in a group has ultimately reduced stress, symptoms of PSTD, depression, and improve self esteem. This differs from other social work interventions because it allows members to give and receive aid from those who have also experienced trauma. To ensure that this intervention is effective for clients, Social Workers must consider all problems that each individual may be experiencing. Mutual aid can be very beneficial to my clients. Although it is my job to try my best to empathize with all clients, I believe that allowing them to receive assistance from individuals that have experienced the same situation as them is an opportunity for a better outcome. For example, as an intern at the Community Market I can use group membership for my clients in order to provide better resources for them. If someone else has experienced a time where they needed food for their family and they know where to go to get additional help, this will be useful for other clients.
