Gaurang Priyadarshee
Deputy commissioner
AHMEDABAD: For Mansi (name changed), 22, a resident of Ambawadi, the world seemed to have come crashing down early in December 2012. Her photographs with her former boyfriend started doing the rounds on the internet and were seen by her relatives. The youth who was engaged to be married to one of her friends - had made some indecent proposals of physical intimacy to her. When the girl refused, the enraged youth mailed her photographs to her relatives. After suffering trauma and engaging in much contemplation, Mansi and her family approached the city crime branch's cyber cell and lodged a complaint against Gaurang Priyadarshee, 24, a resident of Danilimda. Priyadarshee was caught and charged for cyber crime.

While the streets of the city are relatively safe for women, the cyberspace has become dangerous - prowling with bullies and blackmailers. The cyber cell received nearly 100 applications in 2012 and most of the applicants were girls and women aged between 14 and 25. Himanshu Shukla, deputy commissioner of police (crime), told TOI that gone are the days when the internet was used for harmless pranks. "We have seen cases in which girls go through intense trauma when their morphed or real pictures surface on the internet and are seen by their family and friends," he said. "In many cases, the parents come to know about it from outside sources. We have talked to the victims in such cases and have assured them that their names will not appear anywhere and build their confidence to come out of despair." Cyber cell officials said that more often than not, harassment starts from a known person after the woman or girl wards off advances. "In early 2012, a college student had made a fake social networking site profile of a fellow student with her morphed picture and had posted her phone number as well. She started getting lewd calls," said a crime branch official. "The boy was enraged because the girl had started dating another youth." Officials said that in many cases victims don't press charges due to the proximity with the offenders and let the matter drop after securing a guarantee of not being harassed again.
The way ahead What can be done in cases of e-harassment? Cyber cell officials said that the first step was to be secure online. "Check the social networking site settings and keep it private or limited to friends to reduce the chances of an attack from unknown quarters," said a senior police official. "Don't accept invites from unknown users. Second, if at all you get targeted online, don't hide the fact and go into a depression. Take parents and close friends into confidence and approach police. It is possible that you might help prevent the crime for another girl."
