Categorization of Clays and Sands In nature, soils exist in different states.

For example a sand may be found in a very loose state or a very dense state. Different terms are used to describe the state of sands and clays as indicated below: Sands are described in terms of denseness and clays in terms of strength. A clay is soft not loose and conversely a sand is dense not stiff SANDS Terms used to describe the state Relative Density in Percentage Angle of Friction CLAYS Terms used to describe the state Un-drained Shear Strength in kN/m Very soft <25 Soft Firm Stiff Very stiff Hard Very loose 0 15 25 30 Loose 15 35 27 32 Medium dense 35 65 30 35 Dense 65 85 35 40 Very dense 85 - 100 38 43

Very soft clays Very soft clays are difficult to sample because of the logistic problems. People have described such clays as muck or poo. But the soil which exhibits a strength of about 1 kN at the time of failure does not fall under this category.
