Zambia Railways Limited operated and still operates a network of 1062 km of 1067mm gauge, single track of which 848km is the mainline and 214 km is on branch lines or spurs
In 2001, two years before the concession ZRL moved 1.98 million tonnes of traffic. Today that is 667,000 tonnes ZRL had and has a total of 37 locomotives (12 GT ,17 U20C and 8 U15C) and has a total of 2201 wagons of various types.
HISTORY
ZRL own passenger coaches have become dilapidated and out of service during the concession. Therefore using 28 passenger coaches belonging to Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ).

Mainline Track The mainline extends from Victoria Falls Bridge in the South to Nkana Kitwe
The weight of rails on the mainline is 91lb per yard (606km) 90lb per yard (101km) 80lb per yard (141km), these need replacing with 91lb/yard
530 km of the mainline is on concrete sleepers & 318 km on wooden sleepers The depth of ballast on mainline varies between 50mm and 160mm instead of the required depth of 250mm to 300mm.
